Renaissance Introduction
Being the most prosperous region, it began in Florence, Italy as wealth was available to support the great thinkers and artists of the era. The city became a model of Renaissance culture. It then spread throughout Europe over many centuries.
Advances made during this time seem endless. People during this period sought the writings of ancient Romans and Greeks. Upon studying them they realized the importance of symmetry and proportions employed by the ancients. They then used this knowledge in architecture and art of the period. One of the most famous individuals that explored these ideas was Leonardo da Vinci.
His Vitruvian Man used the concept of symmetry from the writings of Greek architect Vitruvius.

Tools for exploration were developed and improved during this time. The astrolab and compass allowed sailors to navigate the oceans to other lands. This allowed for not only the discovery of places not known to exist before but also for the development of trade of such goods as spices, gems and silks. This provided for the increased prosperity of the era as well.
