Mean
The mean is also known as the average. You find the mean by adding all of the data in a set and then dividing by the number of things that were in that set.
Example: 4, 6, 5, 3, 2 Step 1: Add up the numbers (20) Step 2: Divide by the amount of numbers in the set (20/5) . In this example, the mean is 4.
Median
The middle value
Mode
There can be one mode, more than one mode, or no mode!!
One mode: 1, 5, 3, 2, 6, 3, 4 :The mode is 3. 3 occurs two times and the others, only once
Two modes: 2, 5, 4, 2, 5: 2 and 5. Both happen twice and 4 only occurs once
No mode: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5: No mode. All happen only once
Range
The smallest number subtracted from the largest number!
Examples
There were 7 rain storms last summer. The amount of rainfall during each storm was:
7 centimeters, 4 centimeters, 4 centimeters, 4 centimeters, 3 centimeters, 7 centimeters
6 centimeters
What was the mean rainfall?
