Exhibit on Miguel de Cervantes
The novelist, poet, and playwright, Miguel de Cervantes was born on the 29th of September 1547, and died on the 22nd of April 1616. His influence on the Spanish language has been so great that the Spanish language is often called "La lengua de Cervantes" Spanish for "the language of Cervantes". Cervantes was also dubbed "El principe de los ingenios" Spanish for "The prince of wits".
Don Quixote
A Spanish novel by Miguel de Cervantes. this novel follows a man who goes by the name of Alonso Quixano who has read so many novels about chivalry, that he decides to go out on an adventure to revive chivalry in the world. He recruits a simple farmer who goes by the name, Sancho Panza, as his squire. Alonso and Sancho go on many quests during their adventure, helping people on the way. La Galetea
A novel about love. The main characters are Elicio, Erastro, and Galetea. Elicio and Erastro are the best of friends, and one day, they both reveal their feelings for Galetea, but they both decide to not let her get between their friendship. Eventually the three of them embark on a journey to attend the wedding of their mutual friends Daranio and Silveria. Novelas Ejemplares
"Novelas ejemplares" means exemplary novels in spanish. Composed of 12 novels, this group has stories of variations of some of his other original works. The reason servantes made these Novelas Ejemplares is because he had heard so many other variations of his stories that he thought it would be a good idea to remake them for moral, social, and ethnic purposes. Viaje al Parnaso
Viaje al Parnaso is a poetic work by Cervantes. It was published two years before his death, and is considered to be his second best work, right behind Don Quixote. The poem is divided into eight chapters. The composition is half comical, and half serious. Visit this sub-exhibit to learn more.
