The Week Ahead
Please remember that we have school on Monday! I guess, for many of you, if you are reading this at home then it is too late. Unless we end up with a delay tomorrow, then you still might have time
We have our Step Up Night on Monday night. Thank you to all of those that will be taking time out of their Monday night to help with this event.
We have Dr. Jeanette Epps coming to Regina on Friday at 1:00. The science teachers will be announcing this to their classes on Monday. They will also be giving instructions for signing up to attend the presentation to students interested in hearing it. Dr. Epps is an astronaut and was brought to speak to the ICCSD high schools as part of Black History Month.
Don't read too much into the sleep article. I thought there were some helpful ideas in the article. .

Breathe into me, Holy Spirit, that my thoughts may all be holy.
Move in me, Holy Spirit, that my work, too, may be holy.
Attract my heart, Holy Spirit, that I may love only what is holy.
Strengthen me, Holy Spirit, that I may defend all that is holy.
Protect me, Holy Spirit, that I may always be holy.

The Drawbacks from Praise
- I recently read an article through ASCD titled Confessions of a Recovering Praise Manipulator. The author discusses the ways that praise can be problematic, but also states that praise should not be abandoned. She states, "before you praise, ask yourself: What's the intention? Is it because I want something in return?" If the answer is yes, then you should be transparent with why you are offering the praise given.
Here are a couple of other ideas from the article.
The Perils of Praise:
- Praise feeds insecurity - students need approval to know where they stand with the teacher.
- Praise seeds divisiveness among learners - some learners will act out as a way to reject praise; others will crave praise for the sense of power it imparts.
- Praise encourages learners to submit to authority rather than empowering their critical thinking skills.
- Praise conditions learners to be motivated extrinsically rather than intrinsically.
- Praise narrowly defines learners by what the teacher sees (or doesn't see) in the student, rather than everything they have to offer.
Alternatives to Praise
- Instead of..."I really like how quietly Tiara lined up. Thanks you, Tiara." Say this..." Join me in lining up so we can go to lunch."
- Instead of..."Yes, I love your self-portrait." Say this..." Do you love your self-portrait? Tell me what you love about it."
- Instead of..."I am so proud of you." Say this..."You should be so proud of yourself."
- Instead of..."Great job on the science fair." Say this..."What part was the most challenging?"
- Instead of..."That's a pretty drawing." Say this..."You are creative."
- Instead of..."You were the best kid out there." Say this..."I watched your whole game/performance."
