Mrs. Turner's November News
Conference Statistsics
Here are the results:
- 74% of the fourth and fifth grade parents responded to the survey.
- 57% were parents of 5th grade students and 42% were parents of 4th grade students
- 90% of respondents said they felt the conferences were the same, more or much more meaningful
- 65% said they were more or much more meaningful than past conferences
- 88% of the respondents said they learned the same, more or much more than previous conferences
- 64% of respondents said they learned more or much more than previous conferences
- 93% of respondents said they were fine with waiting for progress reports when teachers have more information on the child (at the time of conferences, we had only met 7 – 8 days depending on which day of the week your child attends. Report cards would have to filled out the week prior to conferences so teachers would only have 6-7 days worth of data).
- 87.81% of respondents said they were indifferent or enjoyed having others in the classroom
Curricular Areas:
5th grade students are deep in research on their brain topic. We meet weekly to discuss note taking headings and taking notes that are relevant and significant to the their brain topic.
Math:
- Students completed the first 4 concepts and were rewarded with a trip to the DIY Lab - what a blast! 5th graders continue to examine important concepts in the disciplines of math and science. The seven mathematic/scientific concepts we have explored and will explore through November include:
- #1 Math and Science will Tell You the Truth
- #2 Counterintuitive Thinking
- #3 Occam's Razor
- #4 Mistakes and Frustrations are part of the learning process
- #5 Its important to Keep an Open Mind (In November)
- #6 It is important to Maintain a Healthy Skepticism (in November)
- #7 Don't be fooled by statistics (In November)
Each concept is introduced through a slideshow. Next students solve problems within the concept taught and then fill out a reflection on the type of problems they solved.
Topic Study:
Topic study is blowing me away this year! Student engagement and depth of thinking are the best I have seen in over 15 years of teaching PEAK. We made some modifications in how our independent research is conducted and the results are significant. Students are finishing their 3-5 minute videos and expert vocabulary. As students wrap up these two projects, we will begin to select personal ways to express our knowledge. Students will no longer use a menu to select projects but design a project/ product based on the Bloom's level of thinking they want to express.

2. Grit - We are exploring the word GRIT - what makes some individuals more successful than others? Studies show, GRIT is often the key to success.
Quote from noted Psychologist and Researcher, Angela Duckworth: “Grit is perseverance and passion for long-term goals. Grit entails working strenuously toward challenges, maintaining both effort and interest over years and years—despite failure, adversity, and even just stalls in progress. The gritty individual approaches achievement as a marathon; his advantage is stamina. Whereas disappointment or boredom signals to others that it is time to change trajectory and cut losses, the gritty individual stays the course.”
