The Van de Graaff Generator
What is The Van De Graaff Generator & How Does It Operate?
Van De Graaff Generators are systems used to show high voltage because of static electricity. They use surfaces, conductors & insulators to create large static charges which then lead to large voltages. These generators are machines used to form static electricity as well as ensure that it is available for experimenting. These machines are commonly referred to as "constant current" electrostatic devices. On top of the column lies a sphere. The column contains a rubber belt that moves across two rollers. Charging by friction begins to occur once the motor moves the lower rod, causing the belt to move over it. Then the belt rotates. As is rotates charges that stick to it are carried up along it. Close to the top roller a metal collecting comb is placed. This comb is connected to inside of the metal sphere. A redistribution of charges is induced by the charged belt therefore causing charges to built up on the metal sphere.
