Summer is fast approaching….
Your middle schooler is likely already dreaming of summer and the freedom that comes with it. Yet as a parent, the summer between 8th and 9th grade can be one of the most challenging. Crossing over from childhood to adolescence means that some of the simple pleasures of summer suddenly lose their charm. The much anticipated summer days can drag on when there is little structure. Teenagers who spend their nights gaming, watching Netflix, and sleeping all day may test the patience of their parents who have to maintain their own work schedules.
With a little planning, the relaxed schedule of summer can provide the middle school child with opportunities for personal growth, career exploration, and service learning. Having at least one planned activity outside of home each day along with some household chores can keep teens productive and be a help to parents. Here are some ideas from our staff:
Build athletic skills and strength through Ankenycamps.com. Registration is open for some activities. Scholarships are available.
Arrange a visit to stay with family or family friends out of town.
Many churches offer volunteer activities through mission trips and teaching in various programs
Summer camps are still offered through Ankeny Park and Recreation, YMCA
Be an entrepreneur! Even thirteen year olds can plan some “unofficial” jobs such as babysitting, dog walking, pet care, yard work, car washing.
Help serve Love Lunches in Ankeny
Colts Summer Band Camp- 4 weeks. Grades 4-8http://colts.org/program-summer-band.html
Volunteer at the Ankeny Art Center. Help is needed for many of the programs offered.
Enjoy our local natural resources at Saylorville, Big Creek. Kayaking, swimming, hiking.
Become an Angel in the Outfield for Ankeny Miracle League. Or volunteer at the library. Check out the opportunities to Volunteer for the City of Ankeny.
Get a job- some businesses hire 14 year olds. Sack groceries, make a sandwich or detassel some corn!
Career learning- summer is a great time to do some job shadowing. Connect with family friends or family members to go to work for a day.
Strengthen your academic skills through camps and programs offered at colleges and universities. DMACC, ISU, Grandview are just a few local colleges that offer programming in areas such as coding, engineering and many other topics.
Summer programs at the Kirkendall Libary. Yes, teens can still participate in a number of ways.
Any other ideas? Send them our way and we will add them to our list!

Athletic Director Mike Bakker's Blog
Welcome to the last month of the 2021 school year. With everything that has gone the past 14 months I am very happy for and excited about the many successes our students have had in their activities at Southview this year! Our spring sports (track, soccer, tennis, girls’ golf) have all started out with strong performances in their competitions. The 8th & 9th grade Spring Play will be on May 13 and we will be offering two performances for family members of the cast & crew. Cheerleading & Dance tryouts for 2021-22 have happened and students have been assigned to their respective squads. Our 8th & 9th grade Instrumental and Vocal Music students will also be having their first live concerts of the year in May!
Encourage your kids to finish the school year on a positive note in their academics and activities. We have had a great year of student participation with more than 1,300 8th grade and 9th grade total participants having been involved in one or more school sponsored activity this year. I am a believer that the more students are involved the more people they have encouraging them and keeping them on the pathway to future successes.
While we are wrapping up the 2020-21 school year it is also time to start looking ahead to 2021-22. Coaches are starting to have organizational meetings for our fall and winter activities so they can lay the groundwork for summer opportunities in the strength & conditioning program and camps. Now is the time to register for summer camps provided by the coaches at Ankeny High School. Please use the following link: www.ankenycamps.com to find the camp page. Feel free to pass the camp information along to your friends as there are sports camps available for students as young as first grade through 12th grade.
Our students, teachers, coaches, and sponsors have persevered through the last 14 months with a commitment to excellence in all of their activities. I believe all have learned a valuable lesson in finding joy in activities, friendships, and being part of a team. It has been a tremendous year at Southview with our many successes in the classroom and in our student activities. Please keep supporting your kids as they make a positive difference in their lives and the lives of their classmates and teammates.
