Self-Care Strategy of the Week
Be Here Now: October
If you are calm, focused, and self-aware, there's a greater likelihood that your students will follow your lead. Mindfulness practices can help return us to the present moment and more easily hit the "pause button" when a stressful moment occurs.
Teachers who practice mindfulness:
- Experience lower levels of stress and burnout
- Report greater efficacy int heir jobs
- Have more emotionally supportive classrooms
- Have more organized classrooms
To cultivate mindfulness, you must sit for a few minutes every day. The first step is to cultivate awareness of what our minds are doing. The best way to do this is to sit down, close your eyes, and focus on your breath.

Self-Regulation Strategies
Most adults use self-regulation strategies throughout the day to stay focused, motivated, and productive, whether that means taking a walk to get an extra cup of coffee when feeling drowsy, pausing to take a few deep breaths when stressed, or tapping a pen when deep in thought. These strategies allow teachers to teach and support students to use their own self-regulation strategies, such as taking mental breaks, taking body and movement breaks, using fidgets, and engaging in positive self-talk to maximize their own learning when they start to feel distracted or discouraged.
