Orange Shirt Day - September 27th!
Orange Shirt Day is a legacy of the St. Joseph Mission (SJM) residential school commemoration event held in Williams Lake, BC, Canada, in the spring of 2013. It grew out of Phyllis' story of having her shiny new orange shirt taken away on her first day of school at the Mission, and it has become an opportunity to keep the discussion on all aspects of residential schools happening annually.
The date was chosen because it is the time of year in which children were taken from their homes to residential schools, and because it is an opportunity to set the stage for anti-racism and anti-bullying policies for the coming school year. It also gives teachers time to plan events that will include children, as we want to ensure that we are passing the story and learning on to the next generations.
Orange Shirt Day is also an opportunity for First Nations, local governments, schools and communities to come together in the spirit of reconciliation and hope for generations of children to come.
Please make sure you wear your orange shirt on Wednesday, September 27!

Classroom Reps Needed!
What does a "Classroom Rep" do you ask? They chat or e-mail with the teacher and report at the PSC meetings all of the "Good News" that is happening in the classroom. It is an awesome job and who wouldn't want to talk about the fantastic things happening in their child's classroom? Please let your child's teacher know if you could serve in that role for this year.

Earth Rangers
Last Friday our students got to experience the Earth Rangers School Assembly Program; an educational and interactive presentation featuring live Animal Ambassadors. The program celebrates Canadian biodiversity, speaks passionately about the need to protect it and introduces students to real-life conservation projects across the country. But, most importantly, it inspires them to get involved.
Support your child in joining our Membership Program at earthrangers.com!
As a member, they'll have access to Earth Rangers Missions, like planting pollinator gardens and conducting home energy audits. Fundraising for species conservation is also an important element of the program, which we believe fosters a sense of accomplishment and empowerment. However, fundraising is not required and membership is free.
Introducing our 2017 - 2018 Servant Leadership Squad!
This past Thursday morning our Grade 4 students who chose to answer the call to serve gathered at West River's Edge Park for a morning retreat. They prayed, laughed, sang and planned! We look forward to an amazing year with you to guide us.
Mr. Berg's Counsellor's Corner ~ Connect Parenting
Mr. Berg and Jennifer de Hann from the Primary Care Network will be leading a parenting group at the CN Station in Fort Saskatchewan beginning on Oct. 4, 2017. While the presentation is geared to parents of pre-teens and teens it can be useful for all parents.
Connect is a 10-week attachment based program to support parents and caregivers of pre-teens and teens with difficult behavioural and emotional problems. Parents meet in small groups with two trained group leaders for one hour and a half each week. Each session provides parents with a new perspective on parent-teen relationships and adolescent development. Parents watch role-plays, try exercises, and work together to develop new choices for responding to their child’s difficult behaviour. Parents receive handouts following each session with key points to remember.
Each child and each parent is different and change is part of development. Rather than teach only one way of parenting, parents are encouraged to see choices that support healthy relationships while setting limits and helping their teen to move forward.
