Advocacy
o ARP Implementation & Principal Engagement Efforts: NAESP is continuing to engage heavily with Congress and the U.S. Department of Education in the implementation of federal coronavirus relief funding, including ARP funds. State education agencies (SEAs) and districts must meaningfully engage a wide swath of stakeholders, including principals, about how these funds should be allocated. The SEA and district use of funds planning requirements present a huge opportunity for the principal voice to be brought to the table. To that end, NAESP is focusing advocacy efforts on ensuring principals are meaningfully consulted throughout this process. NAESP recently collaborated with Dr. Marguerite Roza of Georgetown University’s Edunomics Lab to release a resource for principals on ways they can engage their district to ensure funds are used to address principals’ priorities. NAESP Executive Director L. Earl Franks, Ed.D., CAE, and NASSP CEO Ronn Nozoe previously wrote an op-ed published in The 74, which laid out four key reasons why leveraging principals is critical to successful ARP implementation.
o Federal Funding for Remote Learning: In late August, the FCC announced that it had received more than $5 billion in requests from schools and libraries for connected devices and funding for broadband connections. The new funding, made available in the ARP, supports schools and libraries with laptop and tablet computers, Wi-Fi hotspots, routers, modems, and broadband Internet connections for use by students, school staff, and library. Funding is limited to students, school staff, and library patrons who would otherwise lack access to connected devices and broadband internet services sufficient to engage in remote learning during the COVID-19 pandemic. The FCC announced that around $2 billion is left in the fund and it will be opening a second 15-day window for additional applications.

Governance
o We have several open positions on our Board of Directors. Do you have what it takes to step up your volunteer leadership game? If so, we want you to apply. What type of leaders are we looking for? Passionate. Diverse. Innovative. We want principals who are interested in taking that extra step to be volunteer leaders at a national level. Principals who want to advocate for their profession and support their peers. Are you ready to take the next step? Click here for more information.
Professional Learning
o Webinars are a no-cost benefit with your membership! Click here to see our current schedule. o Dr. Gracie Branch, NAESP Associate Executive Director, Professional Learning, shared the following: NAESP is working with several national education organizations through the National Policy Board for Educational Administration (NPBEA) to develop a field guide for school leaders to unpack PSEL standard #3 – Equity and Cultural Responsiveness. We want this national project, funded by the Wallace and Joyce Foundations, to be most impactful in the field and help school leaders focus on equity in their school communities with strategic intentionality. As a part of that project, NAESP is convening a group of 15 distinguished school leaders to participate in two virtual focus group meetings to provide input into the development of the field guide. The focus groups will convene in mid-October and November (dates to be determined) and consist of two-hour virtual sessions so a total time commitment of four hours. The attached document will provide more information about the project. I hope that you will consider participating in this important work and contact me if you are interested (gbranch@naesp.org or cell is 405-312-4297).
