PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
We are entering the time of year when our 3rd-8th grade students will be taking the annual state assessments. Meaningful and relevant tests work hand-in-hand with rigorous academic standards. The state’s summative tests are called the Colorado Measures of Academic Success (CMAS), which measure students’ mastery of the standards and the complex thinking and other critical skills students need to be successful in school and in life.
How does taking state tests help students?
- Taking the tests allows you to show what you've learned and practiced in your school.
- It lets you and your family know if your school is doing a good job supporting your learning.
- It gives you and your family information about how local schools in your community are meeting the needs of all students.
- It tells you and your family about your progress toward completing high school and success after high school, such as attending college and being ready for a career.
How does taking state tests help my school?
- Taking the tests provides information to your principal and teachers about how well all students
- are doing at your school.
- It allows your principal and teachers to see any differences between groups of students and make improvements, so all students can succeed.
- It helps leaders who make decisions know which schools need more money and help.
- It draws attention if some groups of students do not perform as well as others and allows educators to address the learning needs of these students.
Performance on our state assessments is what leads to Paonia K-8 recognitions such as School of Distinction, Governor's Bright Spot Award, John Irwin School of Excellence, and Governor's Distinguished Improvement Awards.
Students will take one test per day. The length of the test depends on the content, math is typically 60 minutes, the reading/writing test is typically 90+ minutes, and the science test for 5th and 8th grade is typically 80 minutes.
The PK8 test schedule, by grade, is:
8th Grade:
Math April 1-3 (12:20-1:40),
ELA April 9-11 (10:05-12:10),
Science April 23-25 (8:10-9:45)

- Get a good night's sleep
- Eat a healthy breakfast
- Bring an extra snack for the day
- Remain positive - remind your child that the most important thing is to try their best, and we are all proud of them.
If you have any questions regarding the state assessments, please contact Mrs. Savory or Mr. Cox.
WAY TO GO EAGLES!!
State Math Counts Results
Paonia K-8 represented the Western Slope well at the state MATHCOUNTS competition and ended up receiving special recognition for doing it. There were 50 schools, 18 teams, and 142 competitors at state, so it was pretty incredible that the relatively small school of Paonia K-8 qualified both a team of four and an individual. Front range competitors, including many who are part of year round math clubs, cleaned up in the competition, but Paonia K-8 received special recognition from the organizers. The recognition was based on representing our small school so well, driving over after a major snowstorm (it took us six hours), and bringing along a student from another school (Hotchkiss K-8). To highlight the significance our small communities place on these kids' hard work, effort, and success, the Paonia Lions club sponsored the PK-8 participants.
Penny Wars Results
Thank you everyone for your participation in last week's Penny Wars to benefit Cortez Bell. As a school we raised over $1,600 in our Penny Wars campaign. That was more than triple the total raised by North Fork High School and North Fork Montessori School at Crawford combined!! Way to show support for our local families!! Thank you so much!!!

Walk and Roll Audit
The Western Slope Conservation Center and the Nature Connection are hosting a “Walk and Roll Audit” on April 3rd, 2024. The goal for this event is to assess walking and biking walking routes between different points in Paonia and Apple Valley Park, identify pedestrian and bicycle safety hazards, and suggest collaborative solutions.
We would really like to engage kids and families to help assess safety concerns for strollers, kids on bikes and teachers leading walking field trips. The event is on April 3rd and will begin at Paonia Town Hall at 2:30pm. We will make a special stop at NFSIS at 3:35 and walk through Town Park on our way to Apple Valley Park at 4:30.
Visit thenatureconnection.net/family for details and RSVP. We have an informal RSVP so we know how many people plan to come. However, an RSVP is not required.
Support Paonia K-8 School at the District Dash Run/Bike Event
The DSCD school with the most participants wins a Climbing Wall activity at the school's field day. Let's go Paonia K-8, we can do it!!
