Morning Meeting-Saying Hello in different languages, silent greetings, seeker and leader
Writing Workshop
This week we started writing our first piece of the year. We learned that we were going to be writing personal narratives. We read a story called La Mariposa and learned about another child's experience growing up poor and unable to speak English. We listened to how he grew and also helped shape others around him. Next, we used different brainstorming methods to think of ideas for our narratives. Then, we reviewed the writing process and talked about exciting ways to start our narratives. Finally, we used an organizer to help sequence our narratives and started our rough drafts! Final drafts will be completed next week!
MATH-PLACE VALUE
This week we started our first topic on place value. We used Nearpod to see what we remembered from 3rd grade. We reviewed numeral form (4,753) expanded form 4000+700+50+3 and word form four thousand, seven hundred, fifty-three. We also studied place value charts and dissected each section. Finally, we looked for patterns in these place value charts and finished our Just the Facts fluency assessment on multiplication and division.
Figurative Language-On Friday students learned about comparing two sounds by using the word like. They listened to the sound of a thunder storm and wrote what they heard.
Language Arts
We read Flora and Ulysses as a whole group. During our reading we discussed the genre, author's purpose, drew conclusions and talked about the vocabulary within the text. We learned how to take notes while reading and reviewed using context clues. We also learned about compound subjects, predicate and verb agreement. Finally we ended our weekly with a vocabulary jeopardy game!
Studies Weekly/Social Studies
On Monday we had a discussion about 9/11. We watched The Man Who Walked Between the Two Towers and a Brainpop that explained the events in a very child friendly way. We had some deep discussions and the class showed a lot of empathy. This lead us into a conversation about the heroes of 9/11. After sharing some of the heroes of 9/11, we defined what a hero was. We then used Keynote to show someone we thought was a hero!
We then started our journey through Pennsylvania! We viewed our state flag, talked about symbolism, learned where prehistoric dinosaurs were found in our area and went on a virtual field trip though Harrisburg.
