Generation of Promise: Social Justice Program

Generation of Promise is Metro Detroitโs premier social justice youth program from Focus: HOPE.

Itโs a high school junior program that supports a new generation of leaders who advance racial equity in Southeastern Michigan by developing expertise in key issues, forging friendships across race and culture and leading organizing and advocacy efforts.
Launching annually in the spring, Generation of Promise accepts applications from 15 high schools across southeastern Michigan to form a diverse cohort of about 60 new students. Beginning with an overnight weekend retreat at Camp Copneconic during the summer, students engage monthly for a full school day through the course of the academic year. They uncover their own hidden biases, learn to challenge stereotypes ad create change in society and make lasting connections and friendships. There are 3 spots open for current BHS 10th graders!
As 12th graders, students can remain engaged and to serve as facilitators and leaders. Over 90% of Generation of Promise alumni go on to college.

To receive a Michigan Achievement Scholarship, for Academic Year 2024-25, students must:
- File a current year Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA): Completed (submitted, completed, and verified).
- Demonstrate financial need when they complete the FAFSAโby having a Student Aid Index (SAI) of $30,000 or less.
- In addition to the financial need eligibility requirements, students must meet all program eligibility requirements.
Students
- Students will receive an email confirming their submission.
- Students can check the status of their 2024โ25 FAFSA form from the โMy Activityโ page after logging in to StudentAid.gov.
Contributors
- A contributor may submit the FAFSA form on behalf of the student only if all sections are complete.
- The contributor will see a limited version of the confirmation page and the student will receive an email with their confirmation details.

Criteria for Granting BHS Honors Diploma:
- 3.50 cumulative GPA.
- Minimum ACT Composite Score of 24 or minimum SAT Total Score of 1200.
- Complete minimum of 4 AP classes.
- No long-term suspensions or expulsions.
- Exemplary school attendance.
- Take a minimum of 3 AP Exams.
- Volunteer a minimum of 20 hours per year during high school (Hours must be earned
- through an approved placement).
- Participate in at least four years of extracurricular activities during high school.

The Start Here lesson is a crucial component fulfilling the annual Education Development Plan (EDP) requirement mandated by the state of Michigan. Students have been using Xello for their EDP since middle school.
This year, many students had the opportunity to complete the Start Here lesson in their Math classes. For those who haven't, rest assured that students can complete it at home!

About our College Essay Guy coach!
Lyn (she/her) is an experienced essay coach and loves helping students tell cinematic stories. Her students earn merit scholarships and hear good news from schools such as Duke, UNC-Chapel Hill, Cal Poly, and Cornell. She is a graduate of Stanford University with a B.A. in English and an M.A. in Education, and holds an MFA in Writing from the Vermont College of Fine Arts.

Miracle League/Easterseals MORC is gearing up for our 2024 Season!
Easterseals MORC Miracle League of Michigan is Michigan's first adaptive baseball field for children with special needs. Located in Southfield, Michigan, the league has a variety of volunteer opportunities. By giving only a few hours of your time not only will you make a difference in a special childโs life, but you will also create a positive awareness in yourself.
One of the most important parts of The Miracle League is the โbuddyโ system โ pairing each player with an able-bodied friend to assist them on and off the field during a two-inning game.
We are looking for volunteers to be Buddies to our players, announcers, set up, concessions and more!
The Miracle League can be a perfect place for individuals, athletic teams, clubs, seniors and organizations to plug in to volunteer and or receive community service hours!

Shelving.com Business Scholarship is accepting applications until July 4!
Three scholarships will be awarded to eligible Michigan residents currently pursuing a business-related field of study. This year, we are offering our largest scholarship amounts to date. One student will receive a $4,000 first place scholarship - with $2,500 going to the runner-up and $1,500 to the second runner-up.
To be eligible:
- Students must be a resident of Michigan.
- Applicants must be presently attending an accredited university or college, or a high school senior that is currently enrolled or planning to enroll in college beginning no later than the Fall 2024 semester.
- Students must be pursuing a major in business or a business-related field of study,
- Have a minimum 2.8 cumulative GPA,
- Submit a copy of their transcript, resume, and essay that responds to the provided prompt.

The Oakland Community Health Network (OCHN) Mental Health School Navigators are Behavioral Health Professionals that provide outreach and resources to Schools in Oakland County. Their goal is to reduce barriers to mental health services which sometimes includes financial difficulties.
OCHNโs Mental Health School Navigators can provide families with a financial reimbursement resource that provides up to $2000 per household to help cover co-pays and deductibles by a qualified mental health professional, such as for therapy or psychiatry.
These funds are available to any Oakland County student. For more information and to be considered for the reimbursement, complete this form.
