Mati Rigsby Debates at State Capitol
This week, GHS junior Matilin Rigsby participated in the UIL Congressional Debate State Tournament in Austin. Known in rounds as Representative Rigsby, Matilin represented GHS, UIL District 9, and ESC Region 11 with nothing less than Leopard Pride.
On day one of the tournament at UT Austin, Rigsby debated for approximately seven hours in two sessions, placing 6th within her chamber of 17 students. This preliminary round consists of three chambers, totaling 55 students in the 4A division. Rigsby was one of only 18 students who were able to advance to day two of the tournament. On Day two, known as Super Congress, Rigsby debated inside the Texas State Capitol building for another six hours, with the other top 17 Congressional Debate Representative students from UIL classification 4A.
Representative Rigsby ranked 13th in the final session of Super Congress. Approximately 300 students advanced from the District to the State level across all classifications (1A to 6A). Congressional Debate at GHS is coached by Morgan Sims, assisted by Alicia McWilliams.
