What's New in Grade Two?
2nd Grade News for the Month of January
Dear Families,
Reading/ELA: This month we will be conducting mid-years PALS assessments. You should expect to see growth in all measures: however, your child's progress in spelling and oral reading level are the strongest indicators of their progress. Please expect to see PALS score reports sent home in Tuesday folders later this month and if you have any questions, please feel free to get in touch! Students will be focusing on the following skills to help build comprehension (2.8c: Use prior and background knowledge as context for new learning):
- Drawing Conclusions
- Making Inferences.
Phonics: We are working on syllabication and vowel patterns/teams. This month, we'll pay close attention to:
- Diphtongs: oi, oy, ow, ou,
Math: SOL 2.6b,c. Students will continue to determine sums and differences using various methods and will create and solve single-step and two-step practical problems involving addition and subtraction. This month we'll connect our methods to traditional algorithms.
Social Science: SOL 2.5 a-h. The student will describe why United States citizens celebrate major holidays, including
- Martin Luther King, Jr., Day;
- George Washington Day (Presidents’ Day)
- Memorial Day;
- Independence Day (Fourth of July);
- Labor Day;
- Columbus Day;
- Veterans Day; and
- Thanksgiving Day.
Science: This month, we are working on SOL 2.3 a-c.The student will investigate and understand basic properties of solids, liquids, and
gases.
