A Message from Principal Sarlos
Dear Palisades Families,
We are so grateful for your continued support! We are looking forward to seeing many of you in person soon for Parent Conferences. Students and staff alike are excited about our Dia de Los Muertos Poster activity, our upcoming Move-a-thon, and the evening Dia de Los Muertos celebration our PTO is planning for November 2nd!
It is so lovely to be gaining some sense of Rythym and Connection here at Palisades! We all know that this is what we have all been craving during the last 20 months and it is coming alive here inside the school. I hope you have a lovely weekend enjoying this gorgeous fall weather!
Warmly, Lilian

PICTURE DAY
November 11 is a no school day in honor of Veterans Dar, so if you happen to be out of town that day, we will have a picture day retake on December 14.
Rainy Days
It is also good to keep an extra shirt for them in their backpack in case for PE time, something that is lighter for them to wear.
October is Dyslexia Awareness Month
Dyslexia is a common condition that affects the way the brain processes written and spoken language. It can be associated with trouble reading, but it also can affect writing, spelling and even speaking. Many children have one or two of these issues on occasion. But kids with dyslexia have several of these issues, and they don’t go away. Here are some signs to look for:
Preschool, Kindergarten, & First Grade:
Strengths
Curiosity
Great imagination
Ability to figure things out; gets the gist of things
Eager embrace of new ideas
A good understanding of new concepts
Surprising maturity
A larger vocabulary than typical for age group
Enjoys solving puzzles
Talent for building models
Excellent comprehension of stories read or told to him
Difficulties:
Difficulty learning (and remembering) the names of letters in the alphabet
Seems unable to recognize letters in his/her own name
Mispronounces familiar words; persistent “baby talk”
Trouble learning common nursery rhymes
Doesn’t recognize rhyming patterns like cat, bat, rat
A family history of reading and/or spelling difficulties (dyslexia often runs in families)
Reading errors that show no connection to the sounds of the letters on the page—will say “puppy” instead of the written word “dog” on a page with a picture of a dog
Does not understand that words come apart
Cannot sound out even simple words like cat, map, nap
Does not associate letters with sounds, such as the letter b with the “b” sound
Complains about how hard reading is; “disappears” when it is time to read
A history of reading problems in parents or siblings

A Message from out PTO
We will be doing our first ever Move-A-Thon!
What is a Move-A-Thon? It is a chance for the kids at Palisades to move their bodies in a healthy way as a school while raising funds for things that are so important at Palisades. This is a chance to let family and community members show their support for our school as they sponsor our Palisades Movers on October 26 & 27th. The kids will have a chance to choose which way they want to move their bodies and will then have a window of 25 minutes during the school day to do their choice with members of their class, all while raising money and earning prizes!
We need three things from guardians:
1. Sign up for the size of shirt your child will need. If we don't receive a response your child will receive a Medium as a default . There is no cost for the shirts.
2. Register with Pledgestar so you can start raising funds!
3. Send out those donor requests and get ready for a fun day!
Other Bits and Bobbles as Promised:
* Below is the new volunteer registration form with options for committees and ways to be part of the community all year long. We appreciate all of our volunteers!
* Want to help us make the celebration on November 2nd a success? Sign up here:
* Teacher lunch for 10/28 during Conferences sign up:
* Canvas a section of Lake Oswego with us to spread awareness about the bond! This Saturday 10/16, contact free and family friendly. Sign up here!
Dia de los Muertos!
Join us as we participate in a culture celebration Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) on November 2nd at 6 pm. This is a tradition with roots in Mexican culture that involves the idea of a reunion and celebration of those who are deceased. This occurs through food, drink and celebration traditionally. We invite you to participate with a craft, take home food option, games, a photo booth and music!
Masks and distancing will be required as we celebrate safely in our outdoor covered spaces.
Additionally our teachers will be including some wonderful components of this into their teaching time, so keep your eyes peeled for those as well.
