A LETTER FROM THE WAUSAU SCHOOL DISTRICT ADMINISTRATION
Dear Wausau School District families,
First, please know that we are doing all we can to safely accomplish our mission to advance student learning, achievement and success. Also, we’d like to thank you for your patience as we navigate in-person and virtual learning during the COVID-19 pandemic. While it hasn’t been easy, our students and staff continue to do a great job following the mitigation strategies we have in place, like masking and social distancing. If there’s anything we’ve learned over the last few weeks, it’s that those strategies are working. As we look at the number of quarantines and positive cases within our District, most, if not all of them, are attributed to community spread.
That said, our greatest challenge remains our ability to staff our buildings and keep them open for in-person learning. Because there’s so much community spread, there are hundreds of students and staff in quarantine at any given time. That means we have to be creative about how we deliver a high-quality education to our students. As a result, our teachers and staff are shifting their schedules to help cover classrooms. In many instances, they’re teaching not just in-person students, but those who are learning remotely as well. So, getting ample preparation time and time to analyze student achievement data, as well as, communicating with families has become increasingly difficult for our teachers and staff.
That’s part of the reason why starting next week, our Wausau Board of Education has voted to shift all of our elementary schools, including 4K, to a 4-day week. Students will attend classes Monday through Thursday. All Fridays, going forward, will now be non-instructional days. That allows elementary staff to have a much-needed workday to plan for both virtual and in-person learning and to analyze student learning data and plan for the upcoming week. You can expect more information from your child(ren)’s school about this change. It’s important to note that this move only affects elementary students, not our middle and high school students. Fridays at the middle and high school level will continue to be asynchronous learning days.
Even though in-person elementary students will not be in our schools on Fridays, if they are in need of meals on those days, please contact Ann Bunkelman at 715-261-0807 or email her at abunkelm@wausauschools.org. You can also reach out to April Susa at 715-261-0807 or asusa@wausauschools.org to make arrangements.
We know this may create some issues for families, but this move will ensure that your student(s) continue to receive that high-quality education you expect and we pride ourselves on. Again, thank you for your flexibility.
Please continue to wear a mask out in public, social distance, wash your hands often, and stay home if you are sick.
Sincerely,
Wausau School District Administration

G2M updates
The next session's registration has closed, but stay tuned for our third session information that will be coming out next month!
WSD GIFTED AND TALENTED NOMINATION INFORMATION
Nominations are now being accepted from parents and teachers of second through fifth grade students in need of gifted and talented evaluations. Parents and teachers are welcome to nominate students who are currently achieving at a high level in mathematics and/or reading, approximately at the top 5% of the class. Please note, students cannot be tested in consecutive years. Teachers have already nominated some students for these evaluations. If you have already completed a Permission to Evaluate for Gifted and Talented Identification Form, no further steps need to be taken. Students who are already identified as gifted and talented do not need to be re-evaluated.
Parents whose second through fifth grade child has not been previously nominated as gifted and talented and who feel that they have a high achieving child may pick up a Permission to Evaluate for Gifted and Talented Identification Form with the Parent Inventory Form on the back from the school office. Nominations from parents are due by December 18, 2020.
When the completed parent forms are returned to the school office, each student will be scheduled for several assessments. These will be done sometime during the school day. These assessments, along with other test data, will provide the district with a student profile. This profile will help determine whether or not a child meets the District’s guidelines for gifted and talented identification. The assessment review is expected to be completed in May and the results will be shared before the end of the school year.
The Wausau School District recognizes that appropriate instructional challenge is needed for all students regardless of ability. The GT identification process is one way to help us provide for the educational needs of high ability students. Should you need further information, please contact your building’s GT Learning Resource Teacher or Tammy Steckbauer, Coordinator for Gifted and Talented, at 715-261-0220.
Arrival
In-person students can be dropped off between 8:15 - 8:30 am in either the front circle drive (last names A-L) or the cul-de-sac on Carl Street (last names M-Z). Please pull ahead as you drop off your child(ren).
Students will not be permitted to play on the playground before school.
There is no adult supervision prior to 8:15, so please wait until that time to drop your child(ren) off at school.
Dismissal/Pick-up
- Bus students are dismissed at 3:25, where they are directed to line up at specific spots in the hallways and keeping 6 feet of social distancing. They are monitored by Riverview staff and walked out to the busses when they arrive.
- Students who are picked up will either be picked up in the front circle (last names A-L) or the cul-de-sac (last names M-Z). Please do not park your vehicles in these areas and leave your car to pick up your child. If you remain close to your vehicle, you may then help load your children into the car quickly and efficiently. This will help with the traffic flow and make the process easier and more efficient for everyone.
- Please pull your car ahead as you drive into the pick-up areas, even if you see your child outside. When parents pull ahead, we are able to load more vehicles at one time, thus making this process even more efficient.
Lunch/Breakfast
- Lunch and snack will be eaten in the classroom supervised by the teacher.
- The cold lunch option will be the same every day: Yogurt, string cheese, bagel, milk and fruit/vegetable.
- Both lunch and breakfast are free to all WSD students until the end of the year!
- Snacks will be allowed in the classroom, however, NO MILK will be offered at this time.
- Remember we please ask that you do not bring in birthday or other shareable treats at this time.
What To Bring Everyday?
- An extra mask or two with your child to keep in their desk. Please make sure your child's mask fits the WSD policy.
- A full water bottle
- ipad fully charged AND charger
- Snack - please be sure the snack that is sent fits the district allergy guidelines
