Deer Families
Deer Hill School News . May 21, 2021
Dear Deer Hill Families,
This is such a busy time of year, but I can't express how GREAT it feels to be moving more and more toward school as we've always known it. Instead of imagining the smiles of students as they play outside, we can actually see their grins. I'll never take that for granted again.
While students are now able to be mask-free outdoors if they choose, we continue to follow our mask wearing protocols inside the building for all adults and children. Additionally, we'll be staying the course in regard to visitors to campus for the remainder of the year. While we are hopeful of opening our events to families in the fall, our end of year activities will be for students and staff only. The one exception is the one-volunteer-per-class for Field Day which Mr. Youmans communicated earlier this week. At this time those spots have been filled.
Have a wonderful weekend. It's going to be hot and sunny. . . a true sign that summer is almost here!
All the best,
Alexandra L. Sullivan

Need to Knows
- Deer Hill has now completed MCAS. Our staff is incredibly proud of our students who did their very best after a highly unusual year. Thank you to families for doing your part as well -- our attendance was excellent which helps us greatly in ensuring a minimal loss of learning time.
- As may have been communicated by your classroom teacher, we are asking for families to return the math kits that were sent home earlier this year, primarily to support remote learning. Thank you so much for sending in what you can. If you feel that your child would benefit from having these materials over the summer and will put them to good use, please email your classroom teacher. We're happy to accommodate those requests.
- As was shared in the letter above, Mr. Youmans has filled all volunteer spots for our Field Day and has communicated with those that have been assigned to a class. Thank you to those of you that offered your time. We apologize that we can't invite everyone to join the day.
Keeping the Joy (happenings at Deer Hill)
- Thank you so much to the Deer Hill PSO for the delicious Staff Appreciation Luncheon. There is nothing more delightful than not having to pack a lunch, and the PSO's kindness was felt by all staff.
- Looking ahead to the last weeks of school, we are excited to celebrate our 5th graders and send them off to middle school with several fun activities. Here's a run down:
- The annual 5th grade Egg Drop is back! I’ve started seeing egg-cellent contraptions making their way down the halls. The Egg Drop will take place over two days: round one we’ll see if they’re roof-worthy, and round two we’ll see if they crack under pressure from the heights of the Cohasset Fire Department ladder truck.
- Deer Hill has collaborated closely with CMS to ensure a smooth academic and social-emotional transition to middle school. Principal Mills and school counselor, Ms. Allison Pearce, visited each 5th grade classroom and shaped their discussion of the transition based on a survey that students completed. On our recent early release day, the 6th grade team visited Deer Hill to meet with 5th grade teachers and learn about the upcoming class. Course selections have also been completed. Lastly, 5th graders will soon visit CMS to tour the school and learn a bit about the 6th grade year in advance of their August orientation.
- Aside from Covid safety precautions, a conscious decision was made to shift our 5th grade end of the year celebration from a promotion ceremony to a festive send off. In partnership with the PSO, several activities have been planned for Monday June 21. They include a themed dress up day, a grade level picnic with an icy treat, class book signing, and our traditional all school salute to 5th graders. Other possible activities that are in the works include a 5th grade scavenger hunt and maybe even a friendly game of crazy kickball against our highly competitive Deer Hill staff! We’ll miss our 5th graders very much and are excited for the new adventures that await them at CMS.
