FOREVER ENDEAVOR
Endeavor Elementary Newsletter -- October 2018
Mrs. Thistle's Thoughts
Greetings!
I am hopeful that you and your family have had a great start to the school year. Our students and staff have started to get into a flow of what the expectations are for our school year. Testing has begun and we are ready to work together with you to get students the needed skills for their age and grade level. Reading every night and practicing the Fry sight words, will really help the students to master skills quickly. Here’s a link to the sight words- Fry Sight Words.
As a principal, I’ve been asked a lot by parents- what can I do to help my child be successful? My family is not perfect, but I’ve learned a few things that have help over the years. Here are a few tips that I have:
1- Complete homework right when kids get home. At times if you wait until closer to bed, they are too tired to work with.
2- Establish a bedtime and stick to it. Sometimes bedtime routines will have to start 30 minutes before lights out so that kids get water, brush teeth and cuddle.
3- Try to give your child breakfast every morning. Even if it is a banana and toast, they will feel better with a little something in their tummies.
Thank you to those of you who have offered to volunteer at our school! We are still looking for more parents and grandparents to help our students practice their skills. If you or someone you know is interested, please contact your child’s teacher or the Endeavor office. (608.587.2625)
Have a wonderful month!

NOTES FROM THE OFFICE
Located in the office are pledge cards to receive a free alarm clock to use for waking up. All you have to do is pledge to turn off all electronic devices (cell phones, I pads, tablets, etc) at night. (limited supply of alarm clocks)
PARKING AT DROP OFF AND PICK UP
When dropping off students or picking them up from school, please DO NOT PARK along the yellow painted curb. We ask that you pull into a stall and walk your children across the driveway. There is additional parking down at the Village Hall that can also be used.
This is so that the buses, and emergency vehicles are able to get in and out of the driveway and is also
for the safety of everyone

ART WITH MS. MARTENS
For the first art lesson each student painted a feather to add to this set of wings. They learned about an artist named Kelsey Montague who paints wings like these on buildings in Nashville, TN. People take pictures with the wings and ask themselves #What lifts you? or what makes you happy? The kids had so many great suggestions! What makes you happy?
On a side note, if you are interested in helping in the art room on Fridays, I am looking for someone to take pictures of student artwork and hang artwork. If interested, please e-mail me or let Mrs. Gohlke know that you will be coming. Thanks!

MUSIC WITH MS. JANES
We've had a great start to the year in the music room. The past few weeks have been spent getting back into those routines and reviewing the rules of the room. The students have also gotten back into playing the instruments and creating rhythm patterns! As always if you have a music question feel free to email me at: janese@portage.k12.wi.us

COUNSELOR'S CORNER WITH MS. BROWN
DAILY SCHOOL ATTENDANCE!!
Kids who have good daily attendance that begins in Elementary School, are more likely to master reading skills by 3rd grade, have positive social interaction with their peers, graduate and find success in their jobs/careers.
Some absences are unavoidable, we can’t control when our kids get a fever! Yet we can do a few things to help our kids (and us!) have a smooth start to our mornings;
-Make sure our little ones are getting 10-11 hours of sleep.
-Lay out clothes the night before.
-Sign any papers or agendas the night before.
-Pack backpacks the night before.
It is also important to have a backup plan for getting the kids to school, just in case they miss the bus, or the neighbor or relative that usually picks them up cancels at the last minute.
We want your kids at school every day! They are missed by their teachers and their classmates when they are absent!

NURSING NOTES WITH NURSE HON
Vision Screening
Students in kindergarten, 2nd and 4th grades will participate in vision screening. Students will have a recheck screening completed prior to the school nurse sending a referral letter for an eye exam by an eye doctor.
Referrals are sent out to parents/guardians in writing so you may take the results to your eye doctor. If your insurance does not cover an eye doctor exam, or the insurance does not cover the cost of glasses, our school nurse can connect you to resources so your child will have what s/he needs. This also applies if you do not have insurance. Please contact the school nurse to discuss the referrals, or if you need assistance with obtaining services or glasses for your child.
Anyone may refer their son/daughter for a screening by the school nurse.
Remember, children learn so much through what they see. An eye exam is the only way to know for sure if your child needs glasses or not.
Mrs. Hon may be reached at 742-4867, extension 4131.
