Mary Anne Cirillo, Education Director of Delaware County Women Against Rape, HSA Meeting Guest Speaker
It is our pleasure to have Delaware County Women Against Rape return to Concord Elementary School in April to offer their child sexual abuse awareness and risk-reduction programs to students. This will be the 17th year that Women Against Rape will be sharing personal safety information with Concord students.
As you may know, Women Against Rape has been offering safety programs to adults and children throughout the county for over 30 years. They are particularly proud of their school program, not only because it’s educationally sound, but also, because it has the endorsement of parents and educators who have experienced the positive results that the presentations create. Following our programs, students have a clearer idea of how to handle unsafe or unwanted touching, and how to respond in dangerous situations.
The programs are age-appropriate and intended for the classroom. Children in Kindergarten through 2nd grade learn personal safety through three touching Safety Rules:
1. An older person should not look at or touch your private body parts except to keep us clean and healthy.
2. If someone breaks this rule, we can say “no”, run away and tell an adult.
3. Don’t keep secrets about touching. Keep on telling until someone listens and helps you.
Families are encouraged to discuss the touching safety rules that they want observed in their homes. For example, if you have children at home in grades 4 & 5 who have already learned our touching safety rules, you may want to discuss more sophisticated concepts, such as: If a touch like tickling or wrestling starts out OK, but then you don’t like it, you can still say “no”. The person doing the tickling or wrestling has to stop.
The safety information is taught through rhythm chants, role-plays and songs. Reinforcement materials are given to teachers and are intended to be shared at home with you, so that you can discuss the information with your children. For some parents, this makes a first-time discussion about sexual abuse easier. For others, this can be a part of an already on-going conversation about personal safety.
Mary Anne Cirillo McManus, Education Director of Delaware County Women Against Rape, is available by phone to answer any questions you might have about the program or their agency’s services, please do not hesitate to call her. She will be our guest speaker at our HSA Meeting on Thursday, March 1, 2018 @ 7:00 in the Library Classroom.

Garnet Valley CTC Quick Tip #24 2017-2018
Garnet Valley CTC Quick Tip #24
Did you know? “Teenagers have lots of reasons for being more anxious, stressed, and distracted than adults. They deal with high expectations from parents, social pressure from friends, and the constant fear that their smartphone will go dead and totally ruin their life. To make things worse, the teenage brain is generally more anxious than the adult brain. This may be due to the rapid development of the amygdala, a brain structure involved in emotional expression, compared to the slower development of brain areas involved in decision making and reasoning.” Matt Bellace, PhD, 3/2016, Edutopia
Call to action… Stress can cause all of us to be less than our best. Read more about what Matt suggests to help with coping with stress in healthy ways.

If you have a middle school student – Join us for Stress Less –Learn Together on March 6th ! Dr. Matt Bellace will speak with students during the day and with both students and parent/caregivers together at night. A Breakout EDU game for families and Health Fair will also be offered.
