GKMS 7th Grade Weekly Newsletter
Week of November 14th, 2022
Mrs. Ewald’s and Mrs. Fowler’s Reading and Language Arts
The students are loving “The Outsiders!” Ask your student about what is happening in the novel, and what they predict will happen next. Students have been working on comprehension, characterization, and vocabulary activities. They have been identifying signpost moments in the story as well. We will be wrapping up the novel in the next couple of weeks. The students don’t want it to end!
Mrs. Boyer's Reading Advancement Program
This week, we began talking about reconstruction after the Civil War. We worked on the skill of sequencing and how to identify the order of events in a story. Next week, we are going to read some articles about Westward Expansion and how the United States continued to rebuild after the Civil War. The reading skill we are going to work on is identifying the author’s purpose and what “signal words” we can find to help determine that. We will examine word choice to determine the purpose an author was trying to make and why those specific words. The students are continuing to work hard!
MATH
Accelerated 7 students will also be finishing up their topic on Proportional Relationships early next week. Our review will be on Wednesday with our CSA on Thursday 11/17. After that, we will move on to Analyzing Percents of Numbers.
SOCIAL STUDIES
Students just completed their Chapter 6 Essay about the Declaration of Independence this week. Look out on Skyward for your student’s grade on this assignment, it will be a summative grade. Next week, we will be starting to learn about the Revolutionary War. We will be focusing on how the Continental Army was able to win the war for independence against Great Britain, despite all of the challenges they faced.
SCIENCE
With this week getting messed up due to the Volleyball Team going to State (Woohoo!!!!!), it also altered my original plan for our Unit Test. Students started the test in class Thursday and will be able to finish it in class Monday if they are not done yet. Then we will be moving into our next unit: Matter and Energy in Ecosystems.
