The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for the 2024-25 school year has launched. The FAFSA is the key to unlocking need-based grants, work-study, federal student loans, and even some institutional aid and scholarships. At this time the form is still in the 'soft-launch" phase while the current issues with the form are being addressed. We hope to be able to offer a FAFSA/Financial Aid night later this month once the form is cleared of some of the large issues.
It has been announced that, although the form is active, financial aid reports will not be generated and/or shared with colleges and universities until late January/ early February. While this delay is stressful, it is happening to all students applying for federal financial aid. At this time, a few steps can be taken.
Helpful FAFSA Checklist for students:
1. Identify who will be contributors* on the student's FAFSA form.
2. Create studentaid.gov accounts. Students and all contributors will need individual accounts (verification of these accounts can take 3-5 days).
3. Gather information needed to complete the FAFSA.
4. Complete the 2024-2025 FAFSA Form by each college deadline. We encourage submission as soon as possible after the FAFSA is available.
*A “contributor” is a new term on the FAFSA and refers to anyone asked to provide information on the student’s FAFSA form. For example, it could be the student, biological parent(s), step-parent, or adopted parent(s).
