Holicong Weekly Update
In a World Where you can be Anything, BE KIND!
Week of March 4, 2024
Holicong Community – Allow us to give a “shout out” out to the staff at Holicong and especially our Code Heart team. Here is a review of a few events surrounding safety & security at Holicong on Thursday & Friday.
· Fire Drill – Thursday of last week we had our monthly fire drill and had students report to new locations as a monitor and adjust situation if the fields were not available. This was a planned drill and things went smoothly.
· Power Outage & Response – Approximately 10 minutes before 7th grade lunch, we had a power outage (along with CB East) and other businesses and residences in the area. Our generators kicked on and we were able to respond to ensure that students & staff could transition to classes and 7th graders did not miss any of their lunch time. PECO restored the power within 30 minutes and we were able to communicate updates to the students & staff using the PA and we were in communication “behind the scenes” with our facilities team, Aramark, and our team from CB East. This one was unplanned but proved to be a successful situation from our response team.
· Friday & Code Heart Response – On Friday afternoon shortly after the busses left at 2:45 our Code Heart team responded to a call over the PA. The code heart team consists of staff, administrators, and our school nurses and meant to respond to a cardiac event where an individual is in crisis and all members of the team have CPR training. In the case of Friday afternoon, this was NOT a drill and the team led by Mrs. Irrera and Mrs. Hamilton responded to a situation with one of our maintenance staff. This response required much communication within the team, school, and first responders. Without going into much detail, we can say that this was a situation where EMT support arrived and ambulance took the staff member to Doylestown Hospital where it was found that he suffered a ruptured artery and was losing blood and the doctors performed surgery. We have been in touch with the family of the staff member and the good news is that he is recovering in the ICU over the weekend and receiving blood transfusions. The family is thankful to those individuals that responded for their life-saving response.
We are sharing the instances above to illustrate that we have processes in place for a variety of events and practice drills with our students and staff and these are examples are a testament to their importance. We want to thank our students as well on Thursday & Friday for their response and understanding the seriousness of these situations. As we noted several times on Thursday & Friday….and will continue to do so….the safety & security of our students and staff are our highest priority.
Thank you!
Kevin Shillingford, Principal
Mike Canelli, Assistant Principal

ANNOUNCMENT FROM CBSD - CHANGES to DISTRICT CALENDAR
Dear Central Bucks Staff and Community,
Last night our school board curriculum committee discussed several ways to address the snow make up days in the calendar for the current school year. We will not be losing any days during the spring break, and we will end the school year on June 14 as originally planned. The committee is moving the following recommendation to the March 12 board agenda for approval:
- Spring break will not be changed and the entire week of March 25 up to and including Monday April 1 will remain a spring break.
- The last day of school for students and staff will be Friday June 14.
- Commencement will be scheduled for Thursday June 13. Principals from each high school will communicate times and locations.
In December, a new law passed in Pennsylvania that allows school districts to use the minimum number of hours to meet the attendance requirements. Prior to this year, we had to meet a requirement of 180 days AND 900 (Elementary) 990 (secondary) hours. The new law requires students to attend school for 180 days OR the minimum number of hours. Our students attend well over the minimum hours, so we already met that requirement.
If we have to endure another snow day in March, we are working with our staff to prepare for students to attend school in an online format. More information will be coming if we see the potential for another winter storm. Thanks in advance for your patience and support if we have to work through that process.
In addition, the 2024-25 calendar was discussed and it will be moved to the March 12 board meeting also. Attached is a copy of the calendar.
Sincerely,
Jim Scanlon
Acting Superintendent
