Boys Soccer Wins It All: First Section Title in School History
Alex Sosa had put PHS ahead in the eighteenth minute, but Fortuna equalized midway through the second half. Ethan Waters' perfectly placed free kick with eight minutes left looked like the game winner, but Fortuna managed to put one over with only three minutes left, forcing the overtime and Kevin's heroics. The title is just rewards for Coach Greg Lamansky, who has coached the Trojans for 11 years along with his work as teacher at PJHS.
To get to the title game, the Trojans had to get past the Hounds last Wednesday. The Trojans dominated the early play, yet they fell behind midway through the half by a well taken Healdsburg goal. But the Trojans were rewarded for their effort, drawing even just before the half. Coach Lamansky's halftime talk paid dividends early in the second half with a scintillating goal. From then on, the Trojans held off an increasingly desperate Healdsburg attack, eventually hanging on for the 2-1 victory.
The previous week, on a cold Friday night at Ellison Field, the #1 seeded Trojans battled Arcata through a full game and full overtime. Despite many great chances, the ball just wouldn't go in the net. In the end, it all came down to penalty kicks. Tyler Guptill, Kevin Rojas, Luis Flores, Ethan Waters, and Dino Santia all connected in a 5-3 final. And of course, there was Javier's save!
Taken together, an excellent season for PHS boys soccer! Congratulations boys!
Lots to be Thankful for...

(Last week's SCL Game:) Trojans Lose a Heartbreaker, Make Us All Proud!
Analy came out with a solid drive to start the second half, behind the arm of their talented junior QB. Soon they again led by double digits, but the Trojan running game refused to go quietly. Behind Dentoni, Wheless, and White, all of whom rushed for more than 100 yards, Petaluma stormed back to tie it up at 36-36. They then stopped Analy on third down (see video below), thrilling the Trojan faithful. The Trojans almost salted it away as they drove 13 plays to the Analy 46. There, they were stopped on fourth down. With 58 seconds left, the defense held stoutly, until the final Hail Mary play pulled it out for Analy.
What made the night particularly special to me wasn't just the remarkable play of the boys, particularly Brendan White who had a career game on the ground, a TD pass, played rock solid defense and picked off a pass. It was at the end of the game, just after Analy had scored. As they celebrated, I watched Coach Krist sprint across the field. He was looking for Eamon McMahon, who had hounded WR Ross Simmons all night. He wanted to be sure he got to Eamon first to let him know what a champion he was. For a good while, as the celebration went on around them, Rick hugged and Eamon; a few yards away, Coach John Crudo was dong the same thing with Brendan, making sure the heartbreak of loss didn't diminish the amazing game he'd had. I wish I'd had a camera to catch the moment, true Trojan Pride!
And now.....! Here we go for the playoffs. The Trojans' excellent performance Friday has earned a home game versus the Hornets of Novato. Let's make it a date to be at Ellison Field this Friday at 7pm.
