The Pony Express
Fun in First Grade
Learning with Mrs. Ackenbom's Littles
Frontier Culture Museum
Baby, it was cold outside! We embraced the winter weather and had a wonderful time learning about the past during the holiday season. We are ready to "wastle" or what started the tradition of caroling, around the school next week just like the Germans who came and settled here in America!
Mokie Winter Lessons
Caring for horses attentively through winter will help to ensure that they get through the season happy and healthy. Horses are hardy in cold temperatures and grow a winter coat for additional warmth. As you can see, Mokie and her friend Buddy have that covered! Care still needs to be taken to ensure that they cool down properly after being ridden, that they have shelter from extreme weather, and that they're being fed properly through the colder months to stay nice and chubby. Here are Buddy and Mokie enjoying their extra hay since the grass started to die in their field due to colder weather. First graders learned that horses don't migrate or hibernate. They are happy as can be even in the cold of December because they grow thick coats to survive the winter weather!
Happy Holidays!
The Littles are working hard learning about diversity. We will continue to learn about the traditions of Christmas and how people celebrate this holiday all around the world. We are also investigating Kwanzaa and Hanukah as well. If you have any holiday traditions you would like to share, please send in a note explaining that tradition or come in for a visit to tell the kids all about it! We are also discussing the importance of the holiday season and supporting those in need in our community.
Oh So Merry Math!
'Tis the season to be Reading!
Pajama Day at Crozet - This Friday December 16th
On special days like our future Friday pajama day, Mrs. Ackenbom's Littles will have fun literacy activities. I want the children to see reading as a wonderful thing. Reading is a joy. It's a time of peace, of adventure, of exploration, of just enjoying a good story. If you learn to love reading, it's not a habit or something you have to do - it's something you look forward to doing each day. Please wear pajamas this coming Friday to celebrate a fun literacy day centered on the Polar Express by Chris Van Allsburg. Feel free to bring a stuffed animal to enjoy our day of literacy as well!

The Holiday Season Is Here!
If you would like to come volunteer in our classroom, now is a time of great need! The holiday season is full of hustle and bustle even in school. There is paint, glitter, and many craftivities to support life-long learning this month and that calls for extra hands. If you have any time available, please contact me so we can schedule your parent helper time in the classroom.
