Summary
During the Jimmy Carter presidential in November 4,1979, a young Islamic revolutions overran the United States Embassy in Iran. This situation was called the Iranian Hostage Crisis. It lasted from 1979-1981. Iranian militants stormed the United States embassy in Tehran and took approximately seventy Americans captive. This hostages would be release only when the shah came back to Iran to stand trial crimes committed against the Iranian people.
The Iranian Hostage Crisis helped cost president Carter his reelection. The hostage situation was a major campaign issue that lost him millions of voters. This crisis was only expected to last a short time but it dragged on for 444 days.
