Staying Connected: A Message of Gratitude and Collaboration
Kia ora Whānau,
We would like to extend our thanks to all of you who attended our recent Student Led Individual Development Plans (IDPs) and Parent-Teacher Interviews. Your active participation and engagement play a crucial role in supporting your child's academic journey and fostering a strong partnership between home and school.
The IDP sessions provided valuable opportunities for students to take ownership of their learning, set goals, and share their progress with you. We are grateful for the opportunity to work together in shaping their academic success.
Additionally, we appreciate the time you took to attend the Parent-Teacher Interviews, where meaningful discussions were held regarding your child's progress, achievements, and areas for growth. These conversations are invaluable in providing insights into your child's learning journey and allow us to collaborate effectively in supporting their academic and personal development.
As we continue on this journey together, we would like to emphasise the importance of staying connected and remaining actively involved in your child's education. To further enhance our communication and understanding, we invite you to participate in our Whānau Survey that will help us gain valuable insights on various aspects of school life, including the learning environment, extracurricular activities, and support services. Your input will help us identify areas of strength and opportunities for improvement.
Your participation in this survey is greatly appreciated and will contribute to our ongoing efforts to provide a positive and enriching educational experience for all students. Together, we can work towards creating a supportive and inclusive learning community where every child can thrive.

Cultural exchange programs such as this provide invaluable opportunities for fostering understanding, empathy, and friendship across borders. Waka Ama Secondary School Nationals
From small beginnings Waka Ama (now an internationally recognised sport) has come so far from its humble origins. For the last 3 years we have had the privilege of being able to provide students with the opportunity of participating in Waka Ama at Spotswood College.
The Waka Ama Secondary School Nationals (a week long tournament), saw many teams rally and compete at Lake Tikitapu (Rotorua) from across the country.
While the competition was fierce, our teams from Spotswood College represented the school with both mana and pride during the event. During the races the teams excelled on their turns which saw their times qualify for both second and third divisions. Not only has this been a time to celebrate our students sporting achievements but also a time to share our school spirit and pride within the community.
Thank you to Whaea Jana for guiding our tauira and nurturing their passion for Waka Ama over and the last few years. Also, a special thank you to Matua Nathan and Whaea Mars from Taranaki Outrigger Canoe Club, and the parents involved for their ongoing support.
NZSS Futsal Northern Regional Cup
When opportunities present for one of the fastest growing global sports, you have to take it with both hands. Only if you’re the goalie.
For the first time ever, Spotswood College sent a Futsal team away to a National Tournament and what a tournament it was. Opening the tournament against eventual winners Mount Maunganui College, the boys had to learn the rules quickly (turns out it’s quite different to football), and had to take on some well oiled machines to which they did with aplomb.
For the duration of the tournament we knew we were having to learn on the fly and embrace our inexperience, and that's exactly what we did.
Mixing flair that puts Brazil's notorious ‘Samba Football’ to shame with some grit and toughness from the heart of Ngāmotu, the team became the showmen of the tournament and captured the hearts of opposition, referees and all those in the stadium.
With tournament champions out of reach, we aspired to be the people’s champions. Playing with positivity, energy and enthusiasm; the boys quickly embraced this mantra, and Spotty Showtime took over.
We would like to thank all the parents and whānau who helped make this opportunity a reality for our young men, Scotty and Moturoa AFC for lending us an alternative kit, and our supporters both in the stadium and who followed from afar.
Boys, you took this opportunity and started something for future Spotswood students. I thank you for your efforts, your commitment and your mana in the jersey!
Here’s to more opportunities like this one in the near future.
Spotty WHAT? Spotty WHOOOOO!!
New Zealand Secondary School Sport Volleyball Nationals
The NZSSS Volleyball Nationals was held in Palmerston North from the 17th to the 22nd of March. Spotswood College Senior boys’ team played in the 32 team Division 1 and 2 competition.
The team is: Wairangi Davey, Zander Dodunski, Rotz Kavanagh, Kingston Lilo, Zalan Lizan, Balu Molnar, Bede Moore, Bryn Smith, Tahi Te Awa, Dhio Yoshimura.
The boys’ competition is very competitive and the standard of volleyball is really impressive.
The first two days of the tournament consists of a round robin in a four team pool. Seedings for these pools are based on previous years results. The team did well in the first round, qualifying for first division (group of 16).
Following this, the team played a further 7 games, the majority of which were played over very close 5 set matches. The boys played with real pride in themselves and the school and the games were exciting and nerve wracking to watch. Despite being from the smallest school in the top Division, the team performed well above the expectation.
Thank you to all the parents, whānau and friends that supported the team throughout the tournament.
