Mural by Normandy Students Puts Talent on Display
One stretch of Normandy is a little brighter, thanks to the artistic talent of NSC students and teachers. Their mural now graces the side of the Value Village Thrift Store building on Natural Bridge Road.
Normandy Mayor Mark Beckmann and Councilman David Hoang reached out to the district about doing something to welcome spectators to the neighborhood as they make their way to the upcoming Ascension Golf Tournament. With just seven days to execute the beautification project, Jefferson Art Teacher Theresa Hopkins and her fellow art teachers made the golf-themed mural happen. Over two days, about fifty students will add their touch to the masterpiece, which features the Normandy Viking and our very own Anandra Chaney, the only golfer for Normandy High School. The transportation department also helped by getting students to the project.
"Rest assured that there is more to come as our school district truly makes an effort to collaborate with the community, so all will see that Normandy is a great place to live and learn," said Suzanne Palmer, Fine Arts Director for the district.
You can check out the mural at the Value Village Thrift Store located at 7400 Natural Bridge Road near the roundabout.
Upcoming Listening Sessions Scheduled
In an effort to hear directly from families, Interim Superintendent Dr. Crystal Reiter will hold two listening sessions. These will be very informal, and a light meal will be provided.
The first meeting is scheduled to take place at 8:00 am on Thursday, September 15. The second meeting is scheduled for 5:30 pm on Thursday, September 22. Both meetings will take place in room 207 at the district’s central office at 3855 Lucas and Hunt Road. We will work to keep these meetings small in an effort to have meaningful conversations and schedule more of these meetings throughout the school year.
Please RSVP to Ms. Lori Thompson if you would like to attend.
NSC Welcomes Three New Leaders
Please welcome three new leaders to Normandy Schools Collaborative.
Duane West brings enthusiasm to the role of principal at Bel-Nor School. West comes to Normandy from the Hazelwood School District, where he served as Dean of Students at Southeast Middle School. He began his career in the Riverview Gardens School District, where he spent time as a classroom teacher, instructional coach, and administrator. West earned his bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from Harris-Stowe State University. He then went on to earn his master’s degree in Education Administration from Missouri Baptist University. He also serves as a children and youth mentor, member of the Missouri Association of Elementary School Principals, and various other leadership roles.
Welcome, Ms. Gully, Dr. Brooks, and Mr. West!
NSC to Celebrate Opening of Believe Project Literacy Lab September 29
The Normandy Schools Collaborative will become the newest home to a Believe Project literacy lab, an initiative of the St. Louis Black Authors of Children's Literature (STLBACL) organization dedicated to improving reading proficiency in elementary students. A ribbon cutting will take place on September 29 at Barack Obama School, which will house the literacy lab. The project is particularly meaningful for Normandy as Craig Williams, President of Jordan Brand at Nike, is a Normandy graduate. Williams, along with other featured speakers, will provide remarks at the opening.
Funding from Nike and its Black Community Commitment Initiative and the Nike St. Louis AirMI Black Employee Network made the project possible. STLBACL was selected as one of Nike, Inc.’s Black Community Commitment 2022 Education Innovation honorees. STLBACL received a $50,000 grant to support the literacy lab at Barack Obama School. The funds provided teacher training, a library of diverse titles, and a colorful mural by St. Louis-based artist Billy Bill Williams.
The Believe 7 literacy lab is also supported by community partners Nine PBS, The Noble Neighbor, and Ready Readers. The ribbon-cutting ceremony will begin at 9:30 am on September 29 and is free and open to the public.
All attendees must register at Eventbrite and can RSVP by clicking here.
Your Child's 2022 MAP Scores
Students who took the 2022 Missouri Assessment Program (MAP) tests last spring will soon bring home a printed copy of their student reports. These reports show your student’s grade level score in Math (Grades 3-8 and Algebra I), English Language Arts (Grades 3-8 and English 2) and Science (Grades 5, 8 and Biology). The student reports provide your student’s performance level (advanced, proficient, basic or below basic) on their individual content area test and provide some additional specific content information.
If you do not receive a printed student report by Friday, Sept. 9, 2022, please reach out to your student’s counselor. If your student did not attend a Normandy Schools Collaborative school last year, we will not have access to your student’s report. Please contact your student’s prior school for this information.
