Strategic Plan Input Survey
VBCPS invites community to take survey to help prioritize areas for upcoming strategic plan
Virginia Beach City Public Schools (VBCPS) invites the community to take a survey that will help identify priorities for the division’s strategic plan that will be in place from 2025 to 2030. The survey is available here. The last day to take the survey is March 15.
Survey participants will be asked to rate from “critical” to “not important” the skills and abilities that the division should focus on so that students are successful in school and after graduation. In addition, respondents will be asked to rate from “essential” to “low priority” the ways in which VBCPS can support students in acquiring those skills and abilities.
Results will be shared with the strategic planning committee comprised of parents, students, school division staff, school board members, and representatives from the military, business, and higher education community. Their job is to take all of the community’s input and develop a strategic framework that will be presented to the School Board for initial consideration this summer.

SCHOOL NEWS & EVENTS
Virginia Beach Middle and Cooke Elementary's Monster Partnership
Ms. Sharon Stokes the Teen Living teacher at Virginia Beach Middle School has been collaborating with Mrs. Romash, a second-grade teacher at Cooke Elementary School. Mrs. Romash's students each wrote short stories that included a monster, what it would look like, with all of its features and colors, etc. She sent their stories over to Ms. Stokes at Virginia Beach Middle School. Each of Ms. Stokes's Teen Living students received a story and then designed and sewed their monster for them to resemble what the story said. They then took them over to Cooke. The 2nd graders read their stories and the middle schoolers showed them their monster creations.
White Oaks Elementary - Hearts Around the World
At White Oaks Elementary, the spirit of unity and connection has reached new heights with the heartwarming project, "Hearts Around the World." This initiative, driven by the collaborative efforts of the school and surrounding community, aimed to spread love and kindness across borders.
The premise was simple yet powerful: families were invited to reach out and collect valentines from each of the 50 states in the USA. What began as a local endeavor soon blossomed into a global phenomenon, as heartfelt messages poured in from around the world..
The heart of the project lay in its display—a testament to the collective effort and the bonds forged within the school community. The first valentine received from each state proudly adorned the school's big bulletin board, serving as a focal point for celebration and appreciation. Meanwhile, the remaining valentines found their place on state-shaped cutouts adorning the hallways, transforming the school into a colorful tapestry of love and diversity.
Through "Hearts Around the World," White Oaks Elementary has not only spread joy but also nurtured a sense of belonging and unity that students will remember for years to come.

WELCOME NEW & EXPANDED PARTNERS
Become a Partner in Education today and make a difference in the lives of students!
The Partners in Education program supports collaborative efforts between schools and our community that promote academic success and personal growth for the division's students. Community partners from businesses, military commands, faith-based groups and civic organizations work with schools to design innovative educational opportunities to meet the eight areas of wellness students need to be successful. By matching school goals with the expertise, expanded materials and financial resources and skills of the community organization, partnerships enrich curriculum and enhance learning experiences, extend teachers' capacity to meet the individual needs of all students and improve communication between the schools and the community.
Community engagement not only makes a positive impact on education, helping to relate academic learning to real-world applications, but it also demonstrates that the community values education and is committed to helping prepare students with the foundation they need to be successful today and into adulthood.
Your business or organization may initiate a partnership by:
- Contacting the school you wish to partner with and speaking with the school’s Community Engagement Liaison (CEL);
- Completing a Partners in Education Information Form and submitting it to the Office of Family and Community Engagement, which will help connect you with a school that best matches the interests and expertise of your organization; or
- Calling the Office of Family and Community Engagement at 757.263.1799 to learn more about how your organization can become a VBCPS Partner in Education.

Pasadena Villa Outpatient Norfolk continues to strive to be an additional mental health resource for adults and adolescents in the Hampton Roads area. This month we would like to put the spotlight on our adolescent IOP which is soon to be celebrating it’s one year anniversary since program launch. Adolescent IOP serves individuals ages 13-17 who are living with diagnosis such as anxiety, bipolar, major depression, personality disorders, psychotic disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder.
Those who have participated in our program come with the goal of improving their life experiences which includes reducing symptoms of anxiety, hopelessness, depression, and unstable mood. The staff at Pasadena Villa Outpatient recognize this and provide adolescents with the support needed by introducing them to various modalities such as CBT, ACT, DBT and Art Therapy. This provides client with a broader perspective of techniques and coping skills which can be utilized to better manage their mental health symptom. Furthermore, it provides the opportunity to continue to explore modalities with their long-term community providers.
In addition to exposure to various modalities, we also collaborate with their parents/caregivers as we do encourage family involvement for additional support. Our team ensures that parents are kept abreast about the progress being made, challenges, and offer psychoeducation to assist family members in understanding the support needed to include information for continuity of care such as family and individual therapy to support the adolescents we serve.
If you know someone who you think could benefit from participating in our adolescent IOP please don't hesitate to provide them with our information to get them in contact with our admissions team at 757-703-4413.

Conservation Youth Team at the Virginia Zoo
The Conservation Youth Team (CYT) program is a high school volunteer and youth development program that was created for teens who are passionate about wildlife, conservation, and helping their community. Throughout the year, CYT participants learn about conservation issues, educate zoo guests about our animals, support our Safari Camp programs, and visit local organizations to participate in service projects benefiting the community. As a member of the Conservation Youth Team, teens will develop important job and life skills, build self-confidence, and earn community service hours!
The program is structured to make their time here more robust yet flexible, and hopefully more accessible to a greater number of teens. There is no minimum GPA requirement. There are also a few scholarships available that cover the first-year fees.
