Note from the Clinic
Also, please remember to return clothing items that have been borrowed from the clinic. We are running low on clothing items...especially girl pants.
If your child requires medication of any kind please be sure to drop it off in the clinic with the appropriate paperwork from the doctor. Please note that parents must bring in all medication. Students cannot drop medication off in the clinic.
Safety First
Bus drivers have noticed an abundance of driver’s that are ignoring school bus STOP signs at some Mayfield City School pick up/drop off locations. To help with this issue and to ensure the safety of our students police cars will be stationed at certain pick up/drop off locations. Thanks for your help in keeping our students safe.
Health Update
PTC Information
The next PTC meeting is on April 1st at 6:30 pm in the Idea Lab. Most of our wonderful PTC members are going to be leaving at the end of this school year so now is a great time to get involved! If you are interested in participating on the board next year, please reach out to gatesmillspto@gmail.com
Family Night
It's Cold Weather Time Again!
Please make sure your child is dressed appropriately to participate in outdoor recess (i.e., coat, hat, gloves, boots, snow pants, etc.). As stated in the handbook: All students are expected to go outside unless the temperature is below 20 degrees or the wind chill is below 10 degrees. Generally, if a child is able to ride the bus and attend school, (s)he should also be able to go outside at recess. The only exceptions are: a physician’s request, a written parent request for the day the child returns to school following an illness, or a request by the teacher or Principal. We have a limited amount of clothing for students to change into should they get wet or muddy outside, so please consider sending in an extra set of clothing for your children.
Inside the Idea Lab
This week in Idea Lab we started each class by hearing Mae Among the Stars, written by Roda Ahmed and illustrated by Stasia Burrington, published in 2018. Not only is this picture book one of our March Book Madness contenders, it is also a wonderful addition to our Black History featured books display. This picture book tells the true story of Dr. Mae Jemison, the first African American female astronaut. The story focuses on Mae’s childhood and how her dream, belief in herself, and hard work helped her achieve her goal of becoming an astronaut. Along the way she also became a medical doctor, worked in the Peace Corps, and was the first real astronaut to act in an episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation! This is a wonderful growth mindset book for you and your child to read and discuss. You can watch a read-aloud version of this story via this link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sF6CYDVdhyA
In several of our classes, this book led to a further discussion about space, so we searched for more picture books on space and every single one got checked out! Other books popular for check-out this week include the Dog Man graphic novel series, Diary of a Wimpy Kid chapter book series, Valentine/love themed picture books, and African American and presidential biographies.
Our next library day will be Wednesday, February 19. Please help your children remember to keep their library books in their hands or in their bookbag! This way they are always ready for library day and can earn incentive prizes by having their books turned in on time. They love earning stickers, bookmarks, pencils, and even book-themed posters. Thank you for your help, and keep reading!
