Frederick Douglas & The War
by Daphne Martin
Introduction to fame, through the text
Douglas was a born slave who ran away to the north at twenty years old. He became famous for becoming a public speaker and writing about anti-slavery, where his self-made newspaper, "The North Star," became very famous.
Frederick Douglas
The North Star
Frederick Douglas' newspaper about anti-slavery.
The War
Mexico and America fighting over the land of California, which America now owns.
Anti-War
Douglas was against the war because he believed that "Mexico is disgraceful and cruel." (War with Mexico: Ruler worksheet) "Mexico is a victim of those white people of America who love to push people around that aren't white."
My subjective response to this is that I think Douglas was against the war because he was afraid that Mexico might capture him and take him back into slavery. He tried to get away from his owner and claim success with his newspaper, and he didn't want all that hard work to possible freedom go to waste.
