The beginning of georgia
In 1733,King george II gave James Oglethorpe permission to start a colony named georgia,in honor of the king.Oglethorpe was a wealthy English leader.He had an idea to send debtors,or people who had been put in prison for owing money,to settle the new colony.The debtors would get a chance to experience economic freedom and start a new life.They would also defend the land against other countries.
The Georgia settlement
By that time England,France,and Spain all claimed land south of South Carolina.King George II knew that to gain control of that area,he had to send colonist there.The first group to arrive in georgia colony establish the settlement of savannah.
Georgia in the 1700's
In 1732, inspired by the need to build a buffer between South Carolina and the Spanish settlements in Florida, the Englishman James Oglethorpe established the Georgia colony. In many ways, Georgia’s development mirrored South Carolina’s.
In 1700, there were about 250,000 European and African settlers in North America’s thirteen English colonies. By 1775, on the eve of revolution, there were nearly 2.5 million. These colonists did not have much in common, but they were able to band together and fight for their independence.
The hardships they faced
The hardships were harsh in early georgia. The fresh water they needed was hard to find,cause the area's water was swampy.Bug-bearing disease.Attacks by indians,and the spanish.The colony nearly failed within their first year,although it struggled on until 1754,when the trustee rule ended and a royal governor was appointed.
The end of the georgia colony
Trustee georgia is the name period covering the twenty years of georgia history from 1732-1752 because during that time the english province of georgia was governed by board of trustees.England's King george II for whom the colony was named,signed a charter establishing the colony and creating its governing board on April 21 1732.His action culminated a lengthy process.
