Reading for Education Fundraiser
Starting February 6th students will be bringing home Reading for Education packets. Reading for Education is an organization that collects addresses for possible magazine sales from families and turns that into cash for our school. Each child will receive a packet of address cards to fill out and return back to the school. Each child needs to return 11 addresses. The school receives $5.50 for each child that returns the addresses. It is that easy. Each address that your child submits will receive an opportunity to buy magazines. Even if the person does not purchase, the school earns money from the address. If you would like to learn more about this school fundraiser please visit http://www.readingforeducation.com/.

Kiwanis Club Sponsors B.U.G. Awards for Mentone Elementary
Our local Kiwanis Club is sponsoring the B.U.G. Program this year at MES. B.U.G., or Bringing Up Grades, is a national Kiwanis program to motivate student achievement. At the end of the second nine weeks, teachers will identify students that raised classroom grades. If a student raises a grade in just one subject, he or she will be a B.U.G Award winner! Since there was a delay on January 30 these students will be recognized at the February Friday Morning Live on February 20th. Each 9 weeks that a student achieves a B.U.G Award, he or she has a chance to win a bicycle at an end of the year drawing. The bicycles are also sponsored by our Kiwanis Club and are currently displayed in our front show case. Please encourage your child to raise his or her grades and thank a Kiwanis member for supporting our achievement here at Mentone Elementary School.
Winter Coats Needed For Recess
The seasons have definitely changed and we have a number of students that are not wearing coats out to recess. Please encourage your child to wear warm outerwear that meets the weather of the day. We also have a growing number of coats being left in lost and found. If your child has misplaced a coat, please have them check the lost and found items in the cafeteria. If you stop by the school you can also check the lost and found box. Students will go out to recess unless the wind chill temperature drops below 10 degrees. Please make sure that your student has a coat, gloves, hat and other winter attire suitable to play outside.
A Message from the Principal
We are right in the middle of the cold winter months. Please make sure that if it is too cold to play outside that your students spend some time reading while they are inside. Just 10 minutes of reading each day can make a big difference in a student's reading level and vocabulary development. Please remember that if you need to contact me you can call the school at 574-353-7465, ext. 512 or e-mail me at millera@tvsc.k12.in.us.
Sincerely,
Angela M. Miller
