9/11 Project
The 6th grade class is learning about 911 this week and next. After watching a short video today, they have prepared questions to interview you with. On Tuesday we will be having a guest speaker who worked in the towers and was there when they collapsed. The students were asked to come up with questions to ask him. The students had many questions following the video this afternoon. With that in mind your student may want to do some research. Please be aware that they may google the topic. As an Advisory team we googled it this afternoon and noticed some of the images that came up were rather graphic. Throughout this learning experience we have emphasized focusing on "always remembering", and how tragedy united us as a country. We asked them to focus on the light that came from this horrific attack.
We thank you for your support,
6th Grade Advisors
REMINDERS
Strings will be on Tuesdays and band will be on Thursdays (Don't forget your instruments)
6th GRADE YEAR LONG EVENTS
KPals
Each 6th grader will receive the name of a kindergartener who will be their KPal for the entire year. They will read, do project, play and learn from each other. KPals will take place on Fridays and has a tentative start date of September 18th.
6th grade Reach Out
The 6th grade reach out is Blessings in a backpack for Our Lady of Guadalupe School in Rose Hill. Our Lady of Guadalupe, also known as OLG, is a K-8 Catholic School that is Funded by the Archdiocese. There are approximately 125 students who attend the school on scholarship. 95% of the children are on the federal food assistance program, and most of the students live in federal housing projects. In partnership with Holly Caruso and the "Blessings in a Backpack" our students will be packing bags of food through out the year and delivering them to the students on fridays. The backpacks are given out to 50 of the families to help supplement their weekend food. We will also continue to reach out and connect in valuable ways for both OLG and our own MJS students. In the past we have done book drives (Last year with the help of the MJS faculty we were able to build OLG a library), sports equipment drives (when they lost their PE program), as well as food drives during the holidays. For the past two years we have had a joint christmas party with the students as well as performed some holiday songs and skits. We look forward to another year of partnership with OLG.
