Read to Succeed!
How to improve your child's reading skills
Springfield
The students at Springfield have been struggling with reading. According to the South Carolina State Department of Education's 2013 PASS test scores report, less than half of the students met the state requirements in the English Language Arts portion, which includes reading. Our teachers are doing their best to improve your children's reading scores, but we need your help as well! It's important that your children are not only reading at school, but at home as well. This fact sheet will help guide you in the right direction to help your child succeed in reading!

How Can You Help?
- Take books with you whenever you leave home. This will entertain your child while exposing them to literature. They can read when you are grocery shopping, sitting in a waiting room, or on a long car trip!
- Remember: once is not enough! Encourage your child to read his/her favorite stories multiple times to be able to read more accurately and quickly.
- Make reading enjoyable! Set up a special and relaxing location in your home designated just for reading.
- Don't forget to work on reading comprehension! Ask your child questions about the story as you read.
- Be patient! Allow your child to sound out the words before instantly correcting them.
- Help your child find stories that spark their interest.
- Make sure to set a good example: Take turns reading aloud at bedtime to show your child that you enjoy reading too!
