Shorewood Counseling Newsletter
August 2021
It's the first day of school!
You may be wondering what school counselors do and how we can work with you this year. School counselors are trained to focus on academics, social and personal growth, and college and career planning. Here's what that might look like in action:
- Academics: four year class planning, grades, scholarships for fees
- Social & Personal: check ins, connecting to mental health counselors, ways to get involved
- College & Career: exploring your interests, planning for post-high school, applications
Because of this, we'll focus our newsletters on providing information, resources, and updates in all three areas. We will send out newsletters periodically!

Links will go live the second week of school!

PSAT on october 13th!
We will be offering the PSAT here at Shorewood and encourage juniors to sign up. The PSAT is a practice exam that will show you which areas you can focus on to improve your skills before taking the SAT. It is a valuable, inexpensive way to prepare for the SAT. We highly recommend that any junior who may apply to four-year colleges take the PSAT this October.
How to sign up!
- The PSAT exam fee is $18 and students can sign up at the Shorewood Business Office or through the Business Office website.
- The deadline to sign up is September 24th at 2:45pm!
- We have many scholarships to cover the fee for qualifying students, so please ask your school counselor for a fee waiver.
- When students register, they will receive a test-prep booklet that helps them prepare for the PSAT exam.
Social & Emotional Support
Top Tips for Being Back in the Building
- Take care of yourself: whether you're a parent or a student, do what you can to prioritize your wellness every day. Only you know what works for you, whether it's exercise, sleep, nature, relaxation, music, etc. Check our out counselor bios above for other ideas on how to manage stress!
- Communicate with your teachers: you are transitioning back to having 6 teachers this year and teachers are transitioning back to having full classes of students! Let them know how you're doing and any questions you have. When in doubt, go to your teacher's home page on Canvas and start there.
- Try to be patient with yourself and others: we're all in this together, and we don't know how everyone is feeling being back in the building together. There are a lot of new experiences and challenges for everyone. Kindness towards yourself and understanding towards others will go a long way.
