Notes from the Orchestra
6th graders are patiently waiting on instruments to be delivered, and jumping with joy when they finally get to open a case with their name on it (Woohoo!) We discuss tips and reminders daily on how to take care of instruments and keep them looking and sounding beautiful for all three years of middle school, and beyond.
7th graders are surprising themselves with how much they remember from last year. Gone are the blisters from plucking, and strenuous home practice with squeaky bow sounds (this was a necessary speed bump for all beginners.) Picking up a brand new piece of sheet music and being able to play the melody after just a few minutes of practice is a hard earned, exciting new skill.
8th graders are making a big, full sound after combining to just one class period this year. Students are plundering their music theory treasure chests, being quiet and letting the music do the dancing in preparation for casting a spell on the audience when they play at our upcoming concert (hint, hint, hint!)
Supplies Needs: For instruments and supplies, please visit https://www.fullersmusic.com/. You may also contact Fuller's Music at (252) 638-2811.
Due Now: Students will begin using their methods book Monday, 9/26 (6th Grade- Essential Elements for Strings Book 1) and Monday, 10/3 (7th Grade- Essential Elements for Strings Book 2.) Students who are borrowing a school instrument are also asked to please provide this small workbook for the year...... Thank you, Mrs. Sanchez.
Orchestra's Fall Concert
Thursday, Oct 27, 2016, 07:00 PM
Northwoods Park Middle School, Sioux Drive, Jacksonville, NC, United States
General Music Musicians
Mrs. Sanchez's students are imagining the meaning behind the music, as they answer the question, "How does music express an idea?" New vocabulary words come from the Italian language as we use appropriate terminology to discuss sound, including: Espressivo, Piano, Forte, Crescendo, Timbre, and more.
Ms. Very's students are creating rhythms with paper and pencil, which the student musicians refer to as "notation." They are also practicing their skills by clapping rhythms to a steady beat.
Mr. Best's students are busy exploring percussive instruments. Students will achieve a basic understanding of the world percussion instruments and how they can be used to produce music of other countries.
Chorus
Students in 7th and 8th grade have begun to work on Rollo Dillworth's "Shine On Me", a gospel-infused spiritual, while the 6th graders have begun contemplating peace with Jay Althouse's arrangement of "Let There Be Peace On Earth".
Along with our repertoire, the students are discovering new things every day with ear training and pitch recognition, music notation and reading music, and forming a healthy vocal sound.
Please note: The Chorus concert for ALL GRADES will be held at 7pm on Tuesday, December 8. This is a required event for every student and will be counted as a large percentage of their final grade. The only excused absences will be conflicts that are brought to the attention of the Ms. Very (anna.very@onslow.k12.nc.us) as soon as possible and illness on the day of the event. Please mark your calendars today! We look forward to seeing you there and sharing our hard work with you!
Health and PE @THEPARK
Coaches... The school year has gotten off to a good start. During the month of September in Health class we covered a unit on making decisions and dealing with anger. In PE we covered flicker ball, indoor soccer, and speed ball. During the month of October in health we will cover The dangers of drugs and the perils of smoking tobacco.
Just a friendly reminder that all students are required to change clothes for PE every day. There are no exceptions to this expectation.
The sixth grade has started their Gang Resistance Education And Training (GREAT) program. Coach Colley's class attends every Monday and Coach Hort's class attends every Tuesday.
Career and Technical Education (CTE)
The Career and Technical Education Department at Northwoods Park Middle School ensures that students receive the basic foundational skills needed to be successful adults in our global economy. Some students may be learning about economics or career choices, others may be learning about advanced word processing documents, while others may be learning how to keyboard or how to print a 3-D ring. No matter which class students are in, the skills that they are acquiring will provide that necessary baseline for future academic and life goals.
WELCOME to Mrs. Kellum and Mr. Johnson who are joining the Career and Technical Education Department at NWPMS this year. It is our pleasure to have these two dedicated teachers join our team.
Supply Needs: The cold and flu season is upon us and we could always use extra boxes of Kleenex for our classrooms. Any donations would be greatly appreciated.
Band
The 6th grade band has tried out and ordered the instrument they are planning to play and will begin with them soon. They will take off and learn many things about music and playing an instrument in a large ensemble.
The 7th grade band has been reviewing many things learned from last year to get them back into playing shape again. They are in the process of finishing Essential Elements book 1 and will move to book 2 soon. We will also begin to read music we may perform for our concert in December to see what they are capable of playing.
The 8th grade band has also been reviewing and working on scale pass offs and working out of their method books. They too will also begin reading music we may do for our upcoming concert in December.
