Newsletter Week 8 Term 4
St Joseph's School Waipukurau 7th December 2022
PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
Kua takoto te manuka
The leaves of the manuka tree have been laid down
Know this my beloved brothers, let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger
(James 1:19)
Kia Ora whanau,
Our whakatauku this week is a form of wero, that is performed in very formal situations on the Marae. It is when you are challenged and you answer that challenge depending on how you pick up the leaves. The wero is to see whether you come in peace or as an enemy. This proverb is used when being challenged, or you have a challenge ahead of you. Together with James’s gospel quote, we are reminded of the need to demonstrate our school values of respect. Making sure we listen and respond in ways that are open minded, reflective and supportive.
Leading in Faith, Learning for Life
Transition - The new school year may be a challenge, what we do, say and how we react when thoughtfully shared is the measure of our success as adults.
We know that transitions have a massive impact on children's development and emotional well-being. Therefore, we continue to prepare our students for change by creating opportunities of our learners to experience change ahead of time in an order to relieve any anxiety they may have.
This month, not only has the college provided an opportunity for our Year 8’s to experience a day at College, we have provided our tamariki with the opportunity to engage in what could be their new learning environment in the new school year. You will be informed of our class composition for the new school year and which class your child will be in next week.
Congratulations - Venturing off to college may be a challenge for some, how we support and set our tamariki up for success is a measure of our success as adults.
In this regard we would like to congratulate the Kuklinkski whanau for the successful scholarship achievement for Alfie as he heads of to St Johns in the new year. Alfie has been awarded the Hiberian Society Scholarship to attend St Johns in Napier. Ma te Atua e manaaki.
We would also like to congratulate Lucy Nesbitt who attained Merit in her Grade 1 Trinity Exam and top marks for the Duet she played with her mum Alex.

School Mass - Wednesday 14, Dec
At St Josephs, we pride ourselves in providing a community environment, which is permeated by the spirit of the Gospel. Together with our parents we share and practise this sense of community in a communion of togetherness during mass. As is tradition in our school, we extend a warm welcome to all our whanau to join together to celebrate our Year 8’s last school mass at St Josephs. We ask that all students/whanau attend this rite of passage blessing next Wednesday 14 December at 5PM. The wearing of our school uniform is required.

MESSAGE FROM OUR SCHOOL LEADERS
Tena koutou katoa
This year has gone so fast, we only have 2 weeks left of school and for the Year 8s this is their last two weeks of primary school ever!
Room 5 has been working on five fairy tale plays for a long period of time and the outcome of the plays was incredible! The whole school was lucky enough to have experienced the play and saw how much hard work Room 5 has put into all five plays.
This week on Friday Room 4 will be having a fun day to celebrate the end of the year. They are planning to walk across the road to the Tuki Tuki trail and river to explore our natural environment. They will then be having lunch and a play at the playground before finishing off with a swim at the A.W Parsons swimming pool.
Molly & Hannah
