Something to Yelle About
The Weekly Newsletter for the Henri A. Yelle Elementary
AN AWESOME START TO THE SCHOOL YEAR CONTINUES!
Yelle Newsletter for September 30th!
Hello from the Yelle.
Happy Almost October! Can you believe it is almost October? I cannot. I can't believe we are already into our second month of the school year. It really is flying by.
As I try to do each week, I use the big picture above to tell the story of the week in pictures for us here at the Yelle.
Well, for this week I decided to highlight and explain what has been the BEST for this school year so far! #1 It is being able to see everyone's smiling faces! It has been absolutely fantastic for us to see everyone's smiling face each and every day. It is a joy. Believe me, we got used to being able to figure out a smile behind a mask, but seeing it live and knowing our kids are happy makes us all so very happy. #2 Our #GoodNewsCallOfTheDay! Mr. B and I love doing them, our teachers and staff love turning in kids for doing great things, and we love talking to the families on the other end of the phone to tell them about the "Good Things" our students are doing. And then #3 Our kids are loving being able to earn a coin and pick out their own book. It is awesome. Whther it is earning 50 hashtags for doing good things or getting a coin for a #GNCOTD, it has been a highlight to our days so far this year. Each year we shoot to do 250+ Good News Calls, and now with the 50 hashtags earned, we have given out close to 100 coins for books already. It has been phenomenal! I could not be prouder of everyone's hard work so far this year. It is amazing!
These and the other pictures from Twitter below really do relay a story of the incredible accomplishments our students and teachers achieved in just this one week of school. Please check them out below and all over our Twitter feed to help to tell the tremendous story we are writing this year.

LLT - LANCER LEARNING TIME
This past week we started our RTI block called Lancer Learning Time (LLT). It looks to combine the elements under the umbrella above with IMTSS (Integrated Multi-Tiered Support Systems) and the other ideas of RTI and PBIS.
If you are wondering what RTI is and what this block is for, here is a definition from the RTI Network: "Response to Intervention (RTI) is a multi-tier approach to the early identification and support of students with learning needs. The RTI process begins with high-quality instruction and universal screening of all children in the general education classroom. Struggling learners are provided with interventions at increasing levels of intensity to accelerate their rate of learning. These services may be provided by a variety of personnel, including general education teachers, special educators, and specialists. Progress is closely monitored to assess both the learning rate and level of performance of individual students. Educational decisions about the intensity and duration of interventions are based on individual student response to instruction. RTI is designed for use when making decisions in both general education and special education, creating a well-integrated system of instruction and intervention guided by child outcome data" (http://www.rtinetwork.org/learn/what/whatisrti).
For the Yelle, we have divided both grades in half according to four homerooms. Students will be working with the four homeroom teachers, other teachers from across the building, and other specialists to form a team. Within that team, we will make leveled small groups of students, based on assessment data of a certain skill, and these groups will be as small as they can be by splitting them among the team of educators.
These Lancer Learning Time (LLT) blocks are each day Monday through Friday for 40 minutes.
Our first LLT sessions begin on Monday, October 3rd, where students will be working on either Math or ELA (Reading or Writing) skills. We will do this standard skill for at least a couple of weeks. We will then switch to another standard based on another skill we have identified our students might need some support on. We hope to rotate between math and literacy skills throughout the year based on data on which standards our students need a little extra support in.
We are hoping this strategic intervention support leads to greater success for our students. So if you hear about "LLT" this is what your child may be talking about. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to me: mgeoghegan@norton.k12.ma.us
Below is also a video from Edutopia on RTI and explaining the reasons for it in schools, and how it can help in Academic Success for All Students.
Thank you!
