Pension Reform
Lawmakers have sent the governor a pension reform bill that outside experts have described as the most impactful reform to a public pension taken by any state in the nation.
The state House voted 143-53 to shift new workers into three new plans that will carry less risk for taxpayers who would have to foot the bill if pension investments underperform.
The plan passed the Senate earlier in the week and Gov. Tom Wolf said after the Thursday vote that he plans to sign the bill.
Before the Senate voted on the legislation, the Pew Charitable Trust, among other groups, had expressed support for the pension reforms.
Greg Mennis, Pew’s director of its public sector retirement systems project called the legislation “the most comprehensive and impactful reform any state has implemented,” in a letter of support to lawmakers before this week’s votes.
