A school for all - Happy, Smart and Proud
Week 11, Term 1, 2020
As we come to the end of a term, during a time of great uncertainty and challenge, I want to celebrate what we have achieved and also thank our whole school community for their contributions. I'd like to thank you all for being patient and for learning alongside us during the last month. Working together has seen that your children are supported with their learning and well-being and has maintained the important connection to school life. If there was ever a time when you see the strength of a community, it is during times like those we face right now and I have never felt so privileged to be part of a community who has so much love and care for each other and our school. I must thank all staff who have gone above and beyond to support families, which has included preparing and dropping of school work, books, devices, food hampers and even easter eggs.
This term apart from completely redesigning lesson delivery to support home learning and the safety of our community we have also achieved the following this term:
- For the first time in many years, held an election process to appoint School Student Representative Council members and House Captains, who join our Senior Student leaders on the LPPS Student Leadership team.
- Successful with our Stronger Communities grant submission, that will see the installation of 3 new flagpoles, acknowledgement of country installation and signage as well as outdoor furniture for community so that they can gather together in our playground.
- Installation of a self contained kitchen for our Before and After School provider TASK.
- In addition to our extra-curricular dance opportunity we started, coding, choir and yoga opportunities for students.
- Despite having to cancel many events over the past month we still were able to hold the following: Meet the Teacher Evening, Harmony Day, Clean Up Yarra Bay, Three-Way Goal Setting and Personal Learning Pathway meetings, Next Gen, Rugby NSW and Rabbitohs visits and workshops.
- Staff completed professional learning in Visible Learning, Coding, Peer Support, and a GOT IT! Emotion Coaching workshop alongside HIPPY, La Perouse Land Council and Gujaga as well as mastering new platforms for online learning.
TERM 2
Looking forward, the advice is that Term 2 will start the way Term 1 ended, that is with students learning at home except for the children of essential workers who can be supervised at school from Tuesday April 28th. We will continue to use a combination of paper based and online learning, delivered through ClassDojo and Google Classroom as well as using Matific and Reading Eggs. Learning packs will be available for pickup from 1pm on Monday 27th April. If you are unable to pick up, just call or email us before 12 noon on the 27/4/20 to organise delivery. We are very mindful of ensuring all students have equity of access to online learning and are working with the Department of Education to have devices and dongles for internet access available to those families in need. If we aren't already aware of your needs, let us know.
At the beginning of Term 2, I will talk more about our school expectations related to learning at home, but until then I want all our families to know that our perspective on home learning is as follows:
- we know you are doing your best and understand it is tough, we are here for you.
- the well-being and mental health of you and your child is most important, do the best you can and reach out for support.
- we don't expect students to be learning from 9-3 everyday, your child's learning schedule will be determined by your own family and work commitments. As a guide approximately 3 hours of learning is sufficient and this does not have to be in one block.
- keep it fun! There is lots of learning in everyday activities, for example cooking from a recipe. When your child is cooking they are reading, comprehending, learning new vocabulary, measuring, calculating, multiplying, subtracting, dividing, adding, problem solving, learning about the effect of temperature on creating change and the importance of correct food handling and storage.
Term 2 - Dance Fever/MultiSport Subscription
We have used our Sporting Schools grant to purchase a subscription to support at home learning of Dance, Wellbeing and Physical Education. The subscription includes 12-15min videos that are aligned with curriculum. You will be provided with a login/password to access this secure website in your learning packs next term.
Learning at LAPA - YouTube Channel
We have all been having lots of fun making and creating videos for your learning and entertainment. If you haven't already had a look, follow this link or simply google Learning at LaPa YouTube.
