Message from Principal Coning
Hi IBW Students,
I hope all of you had an outstanding spring vacation whether you stayed local in Portland and the NW or traveled far. I was able to spend time with my younger daughter, as it was her spring break from college, and I also did some traveling into the forests and the beaches of the Olympic Peninsula.
This week is a four day week with a grading day this Friday for our teachers. Other than that, we have a long stretch of school until we hit Memorial Weekend at the end of May. I always find this time of year goes by very quickly, so, do all you can to stay on top of your school work and utilize FLEX times as much as possible.
AND, we have a lot of fun happening over the next month with Multicultural Week the week of April 15th, spring athletics events all over the city, and prom on May 4th. This is such a fun time of year!
In the meantime, I am really paying attention to student attendance. We know school attendance is directly tied to school achievement. Our Attendance Coach, Juan Medina, and your grade level administrator will be meeting with you when we notice both your attendance and grades are suffering.
For Seniors:
The "60 Day Rule" begins TODAY, April 1st and that’s not a joke! Commencement disqualification: Requiring that seniors be disqualified from participation in commencement exercises and related activities if within 60 school days of the last senior school day (May 31, 2024), they are found to be in violation of district Alcohol or Drug policy or any violation resulting in three or more days of suspension or more serious disciplinary action. (Reference 4.30.020-AD) Be aware that all school pranks, resulting in vandalism or disruption of the school day, could also be a violation of this rule and may result in not being allowed to participate in prom and/or graduation.
I am meeting with many seniors this week and next about your attendance if your attendance rate is under 85%. Please know that what I am looking for is improvements in your attendance. For example, if you cannot increase your attendance to 85%, that is okay as long as we can agree to find ways in which it can improve.
Keep an eye out for a letter coming from me by Monday of next week with many more details.

After careful consideration and the active participation of our student body through voting, interviews, and input from our current student government team, we've arrived at the final list of leaders. It was a challenging decision-making process for all involved. Thank you to everyone who ran and congratulations to the winners! We are so proud of all of your hard work and dedication to help run our school, we are excited to see what our new leaders can accomplish!

Student Government Team - Updated on 4/4/24
The 2023-24 student government would like to inform the IBWHS student body of a decision regarding next year’s student body government and some changes we are making to the roles. In response to the Treasurer's heavy workload and considering the challenges encountered during this year's election process, we have opted to split each Treasurer role into two positions. This change aims to better manage the responsibilities of the position while also addressing the shortcomings of the recent elections in as fair a way as possible. We are excited to welcome Saaleha Mohamed ‘25 and Gabriel Horwitz ‘26 to our Treasurer team! Our complete Treasurer team will be Saaleha Mohamed ‘25 and Parker Sherburne ‘25 fulfilling the Treasurer position, and Paxton Foster-Kramer ‘26 and Gabriel Horwitz ‘26 fulfilling the Vice Treasurer position.
During the latest student election cycle, we implemented a new process utilizing a combination of ranked-choice voting and candidate interviews. However, we recognize that our communication regarding the weighting of these interviews — accounting for 30% of the overall score — was not effectively conveyed to the student body, nor was it effectively implemented. Moving forward, we are committed to refining our election procedures to ensure fairness and transparency for all students.
We are actively seeking feedback on the election process. We encourage you to share your thoughts and suggestions via a Google form, which will assist us in further improving our practices and serving the student body better.
In addition, we are pleased to announce that we are actively working on drafting a new student government constitution for Ida B Wells High School student leaders. This constitution will serve as a foundational document, solidifying our practices and enhancing transparency for the entire student body. Once completed, this constitution will be publicized on the school website and our social media.
Thank you for your understanding and continued support as we strive to enhance our student government and its processes.
Sincerely,
IBWHS Associated Student Body Presidents, ‘23-’24 and ‘24-’25: Lucia Donovan ‘24, Amelia Garrahan ‘24, Jade Marotta ‘25
Activities Director: Ms. Griffin
IBWHS to support SW Hope Food Drive for Neighborhood House
SW Hope Food Drive to be extended after Spring Break
IBWHS is once again a Partner in Hope for the Neighborhood House annual SW Hope Community Food Drive. See their website for more information regarding the entire event that runs through April 6: https://nhpdx.org/sw-hope/
Our IBW PositiveCharge Club is taking the lead this year but will be partnering with other school clubs to help make the 2024 drive very successful. We have set our 2024 goal at 10,000 lbs of food (or the equivalent in dollars; $1 = 4 cans of food). We think 10,000lbs is very attainable with the help from the IBWHS Community!
Edit from Leanne Van Horn: I heard a presentation yesterday from a Neighborhood House Representative about SW Hope. Prior to the pandemic, Neighborhood House served around 3000 people per year. Last year they served 16,000! The need in our own neighborhood has grown immensely!
Our collection will run from February 23 -
- General collection of canned food and non perishable goods at IBWHS. Collection bins are located
at the front entrance of the school and in front of the gym
- Collection at our Home Track and Field Meet on 3/20.
- Collection of $ through a special account in SchoolPay https://pps.schoolpay.com/pay/for/SW-Hope-Food-Drive-for-Neighborhood-Hous/Sc6nTaD or use the QR code above.
Plus stay tuned for more...
Spring Campus Clean Up
We are hosting our spring clean up with our community partners- Greater Portland Bible Church and the SW Trails on April 27th from 9-Noon! Bring your gloves, loppers, and other garden tools and meet on the front patio of the school on Saturday, April 27th. Greater Portland Bible Church will provide some morning snacks and our school will provide lunch for our volunteers!
Student Educational Equity Development (SEED) Survey for Grades 9, 10 and 11
Grades 9, 10, 11
Oregon Department of Education
Student Educational Equity Development (SEED) Survey
When: Week of April 8-12 in Science classes
What:
The Student Educational Equity Development Survey (SEED) was developed by the Oregon Department of Education (ODE) to gather information about the educational experiences of students in Oregon. Results from the survey will help ODE define and allocate resources and supports for school districts and inform curriculum, instruction and other supports offered to students.
Beginning in the 2023-24 school year, districts are required to offer the SEED survey to all students in grades 3-11. Parents or students can decline participation. The easiest way to decline is for students to start the survey and answer "No" to the first question that asks whether the student wants to participate.
The SEED survey takes 10-15 minutes to complete.
What students need to do:
–Students must bring a CHARGED PPS Chromebook for the SEED survey in their science classes
–Students attend their regular scheduled classes
Transportation Mode Survey for Students and Staff
The Office of Modernization is looking for info from our students and staff around how you get to school. This survey helps the school understand how students and staff travel to and from school and some of the barriers to non-vehicle travel. Please answer as many questions as you can.

ACADEMICS
Save the Date! Understanding the Rainforest Mind
For Juniors - OSAS (Oregon Statewide Assessment System)
JUNIORS (11)
Reminder: OSAS (Oregon Statewide Assessment System)
Is coming up THIS MONTH in ELA, Math, and Science classrooms (see below)
PPS charged CHROMEBOOK NEEDED
In the 2014-15 school year, Oregon joined twelve other states to use the Smarter Balanced Assessment tests for their mandatory state assessments. These standardized tests assess how well students are mastering content in key subject areas (ELA, Math, & Science) aligned to the Common Core State Standards. Beginning 2019, these assessments are referred to as OSAS (Oregon Statewide Assessment System) tests.
Why should students test?
Learning Progress: The OSAS act as a snapshot of your child’s progress that may be considered along with other pieces of information to determine your child’s academic success
Student and System Assessment: A balanced assessment system offers all students, especially historically underserved students, opportunities to demonstrate their progress. Ultimately, a balanced assessment system creates a shared understanding among educators and a more transparent process for parents to access and understand their student’s progress throughout their educational career. If OSAS results demonstrate that students are not meeting standards, PPS will explore why and explore potential solutions to make the necessary adjustments for improvements at a district-wide level.
State and Federal Accountability: Oregon Department of Education (ODE) rates all schools throughout the state. ODE will produce report cards of all schools based, in part, on OSAS participation rates. Lower participation can negatively affect school ratings and can present an inaccurate view of our student’s achievement at Ida B. Wells.
WHEN
OSAS testing will happen in your student’s regular classrooms during the following weeks:
–Math - April 8-12 (est. 1 class period)
- Science - April 15-19 or April 22-26 per Science teachers needs (est. 1 class period)
–English Language Arts - April 22 - 26 (est. 2 class periods)
WHAT STUDENTS DO
–JUNIORS must bring their CHARGED PPS chromebooks for testing!
–All students whether testing or not, will report to their regular classroom as there will be class for all.
–These are normal days for classes (i.e. there is NO “special schedule”). As always, see Trivory for bell schedules and daily events.
To learn more OSAS please visit PPS’ Assessment Main Page, including opt out information.
