Boone Bear Facts
February 2, 2017
Note from the Principal
WOW!!! It is already February. This semester is just flying by. We have lots going on these days at Boone.
I want to send out a HUGE congratulations to all of our Science Fair contestants. Even if you were not selected to move on to the Regional Science Fair, you all did a wonderful job. We had a representative who oversees the Science Fair for all of the Austin area come to Boone as one of our judges and she raved on and on about how great the projects were and the wonderful young scientific minds we must have here are Boone. All in all, it was very impressive.
Last week we also had our career days for our third through fifth graders which was yet another wonderful success. In fact, we had so much going on that at one point last Friday, we had the Career Days going on outside on the school grounds, the Lannaya Drum and Dance group performing in the cafeteria for our younger students, and the Covington MS band and Orchestra playing for our fifth graders. Never a dull moment!!!
One small bit of business, please don’t forget to have your orange car rider signs prominently displayed at dismissal. There are times when we have other teachers covering these duty responsibilities for a variety of reasons and although many of the teachers know you by sight, there are times when someone else is on duty that may not know you and the signs help all of us in communicating, which in turn helps to keep our students safe.Counselor's Corner
Career Days
On Thursday, January 26 and Friday, January 27, 3rd -5th graders had their third annual Career Days. We hosted a variety of professionals from around the community to speak to the students about their careers. This experience provided a great opportunity for the students to relate the classes they are taking now to their future careers and success in jobs.
A variety of APD units visited Boone, which some of you may have even heard or seen the display on the field. The students saw 6 different units: District Representatives, Air-1, SWAT, Motorcycle patrol, Joint Juvenile, and Mounted patrol. The students didn’t know what to think when they saw a helicopter land, motorcycles and SWAT parked on the blacktop, and 2 horses grazing on Boone’s field. Through organized rotations the students were able to spend time with each unit to hear about their specialization and professional background.
Austin’s Fire Department visited too! They brought their fire truck with its 105 ft. ladder stretched out and four of their firefighters. The men and women helped explain the features of the fire truck and firefighting as a career. Students were able to walk around the fire truck and see all of the special ins and outs that many of us don’t see. At the end, students had time to ask questions. They asked impressive questions about their career, training, and experiences. Go Boone Bears!
We had so many careers shared with our students! Thank you to all of the fabulous guests that shared their time and passion for what they do in our community! We appreciate you!
