IAR Testing is Happening this Month
IAR testing at Nathan Hale for 3rd and 4th grade is March 11 - March 15.
IAR testing at Heritage for 5th - 8th grade is March 18 - March 22.
It is again time for IAR end of Year Tests. The students have worked hard all year long, studied, annotated, written papers, done creative projects in their classes and practiced good test taking skills. We need your help to encourage them during the tests. This is not a time to fret or fear, but a time to be excited about all that our scholars have learned this year. Please read and follow the tips below to ensure that your child, our scholar, has the best chance for even greater success. Remember, we need all students at school everyday during the testing dates. Our goal is to have 100% attendance on the test dates. Students will take 2 tests a day. REMEMBER: WE ARE THE BEST, WE ARE BETTER THAN THE REST, WE ARE THE MIGHTY, MIGHTY SUNNYBROOK! LET'S HAVE A PRODUCTIVE TESTING PERIOD!!!!!!!
Tips FOR PARENTS
Here are three simple tips to help your child do his/her best on test day!
1. Prepare for test day the night before (So your child doesn’t feel rushed in the morning, including charging their Chromebook)
2. Go to bed early to get a good night’s sleep (8 to 11 hours is recommended)
3. Eat a healthy breakfast (Choose fruits & whole grains over sugary foods)
4. Encouragement…
KIDS LOVE IT & NEED IT!
Surprise your child with a special note from you.

Nathan Hale EL Students learn About Jamaica
Did you know we have a family in Sunnybrook 171 who is from Jamaica? The EL students at Nathan Hale did a country study for Black History Month all about Jamaica! The EL student's had a tie dye party to make shirts, listened to reggae music, learned all about places in Jamaica, and important facts about their history. Using our green screen, we were able to "visit" some of these places! We loved learning about Jamaica, YA MON!
Nathan Hale Black History Month Program
The Black History Program at Nathan Hale came together on Thursday, February 29, 2024. It was a SPECTACULAR event! Students in all grade levels worked hard researching and investigating past and current African-American individuals who have made history or are in the role of making history.
4th-grade Students took on the responsibility of forming the annual Black History Choir under Ms. Estrada, Music teacher, with Honorary support from Ms. Lane and Ms. Richards. 4th-grade teachers.
Mrs. Richards with the assistance of the entire Black History Committee created a program and brought the program to life. The result was a program that captured student effort, talent, and pride.
Nathan Hale Mad Science Day
Thursday, February 27, 2024, marked the First Mad Science Day at Nathan Hale!
Dr. Pettis planted the seed, and the Nathan Hale Staff ran with it! What better way to show students that SCIENCE is ALL AROUND Us than to have students immersed in it from the beginning until the end of the day!
Teachers were charged with creating Science experiments for their grade-level students individually or collectively as a team. As you might be able to see from the pictures, MANY GOOD THINGS were GOING ON! Science was also picked up in ART, MUSIC, and PE. Students were sold on the idea!
THE BEST DAY EVER was heard throughout the day from Kindergarten up to 4th graders! Mad Science Day was a HIT and will become an annual event. Next year, Mad Science Day will be coordinated with National Science Day to bring even more excitement about Science to our students as we continue to show them that there is a little bit of science in all of us.
Cooking Club is Cooking Up Some Great Treats
The Cooking with Miss Hanft Club at Nathan Hale has been cooking up a storm! Students have continued to meet once a week to cook a new dish from scratch while focusing on healthy ingredients, measuring ingredients for a recipe, and teamwork.
In the past few weeks, the club has made stuffed crust pizza with homemade dough, alfredo sauce, Greek yogurt ranch dressing with hot wings, and fresh vegetable spring rolls just to name a few of the delicious dishes. One of the most fun experiences has been rolling out fresh pasta dough.
7th Grade Honor Roll Students Visit the Shedd
Seventh grade honored 29 scholars for their hard work during Q2 with a trip to Chicago. Mrs. Wilson, Ms. Cuevas, and Mrs. Saucier took these honor roll students to the Shedd Aquarium. They viewed many aquatic creatures, explored their habitats, and learned about ways to conserve the planet. We had a beautiful day to explore together. Great job, students!
Great Things Happening in Communications
In Communications class, seventh grade students have been learning about Thinking Traps. These thinking traps are defined as exaggerated or irrational negative thought patterns that can lead us to believe things that aren't necessarily true. They can cause automatic negative thoughts that have the power to change how we think about ourselves, especially when we use digital media. Students have learned and applied strategies to help prevent or stop these automatic negative thinking traps from coloring their experiences on social media, other digital platforms, and in their daily interactions with people. Seven of these Thinking Traps are listed below. Being aware of Thinking Traps and choosing to think differently about our responses to automatic negative thoughts can improve our well-being and our mental and emotional health.
