Reading Bowl 2024 Missouri Champions
East Elementary is proud to announce that Mrs. Lincoln's 3rd grade class has been crowned Missouri State Reading Champions. This championship came as a result of reading the most minutes per team over four weeks during READBowl 2024: The World Championship of Reading, a global reading competition put on by Read With Malcolm, the Youth Literacy Initiative of NFL Super Bowl Champion and children's book author Malcolm Mitchell.
The seventh annual competition was held from January 8 through Super Bowl Sunday. "Winning a state championship is always prestigious," said Mitchell. "However this year is especially notable, as there were more than 280,000 students, from all 50 states and 14 countries on the reading field for the big game this year. I am so proud of every student who competed and congratulate our state and national champions. Training for READBowl 2025 begins now."
Overall, students from across the globe read for more than 180 million minutes during READBowl 2024. Mitchell, who struggled to read through school and into college, has made it his mission to reach kids and help them read to a better future.
East Art Show and Kids' Craft Fair
We are so excited for the student Art Show being held March 12 from 4-7! Students k-4 attending East Elementary and Early Childhood students will all have artwork framed and on display for everyone to enjoy! Artwork can be PRE-PURCHASED for $25 and then taken home that evening. Any artwork not purchased that evening will be sent home at a later date (unframed). Parents will receive an email prior to the March 12 event with a photo of the artwork to be on display and a link to pre-pay BEFORE the event. If you would like a sneak peek, click here! Filter by class to see your child’s artwork. Proceeds from the purchased artwork will go back to the school to be used for student and staff enrichment.
During the Art Show there will also be an East Elementary k-4 student Craft Fair in the gym. ANYONE attending the art show is welcome to shop at the craft fair. We ask that you bring quarters only, as vendors will be selling in .25 increments and making change is hard for some vendors.
Also on site will be Sugar Chic Creamery available for purchase. We are thrilled to showcase our talented artists and support the work they have done! We hope you can join us for this fun night!
Any questions can be directed to Mrs. Lacey Job, art teacher at East Elementary. ljob@jackson.k12.mo.us

Mrs. Moyers' Message
This past week in Counseling, a 1st grade student raised her hand and asked, “Why do we have to learn about all these feelings?” I told her that was such a great question! I reminded her and her classmates that we’ve been working hard to learn about our different feelings so we can “Name it, to tame it.” We all have feelings every day and they can change throughout the day, so being able to name how we’re feeling helps us to know how to tame it if it’s a feeling that is getting in the way of our learning or having fun with our friends.
Essentially, learning about all these feelings helps us to develop our emotional regulation. Emotional regulation is basically being able to be in control of our emotions and our responses/reactions to emotions instead of them being in control of us. In order to be in control of our emotions, we first have to be able to identify or name how we’re feeling. Building our emotional vocabulary helps us to be able to more accurately identify and describe how we’re feeling. Next, we need to figure out what helps us to manage or tame our emotions that get too big before we do or say something that might be hurtful or harmful to someone or something else or even ourselves. As I often remind the students, any feeling you have is totally okay. Doing or saying something hurtful or harmful to someone else, yourself, or property is not okay. One of the most basic and effective coping skills is to take deep breaths. There are times that another coping strategy needs to be used, too, like getting a drink of water, taking a walk, or talking to someone.
One of the things we’re currently learning in Counseling is to try to understand why different emotions, especially harder ones like sadness or worry, show up. When we take a minute to sit with our emotion and figure out why it showed up, it can help us better understand how to manage it.
Being able to regulate our emotions is an essential element to our success in so many different ways - academically, personally/socially, and when we get old enough, professionally. You can help your student become more independent in regulating their emotions by helping them name how they’re feeling and figuring out coping strategies that help them. Modeling these things yourself is one of the most powerful ways to teach your student. Saying something like “I feel frustrated right now because I keep getting interrupted. I’m going to close my eyes and take some deep breaths.” is a great way to show your student that you have feelings that you have to name and tame, too!
