KNCPE Royal Report
Agape. Identity. Belonging. Empowerment. Pride
KNCPE Thought of the WeeK
KNCPE Quote of the Week
KNCPE Visual Anchor of the Week
Starting a school from the ground up has truly been the most challenging, yet rewarding task of my professional career. Our phenomenal leadership, operations team (including our amazing intern Rachel Wilson), our SPED Coordinator, Jacqueline and our School Counselor, Anishia, have all been a part of this journey of literally creating something out of nothing. Soon, each of you will be shoulder-deep in the process of creating a lasting institution out of KNCPE as well. A year ago, KNCPE only existed in the form of a vision statement in my Documents folder on my laptop. Today, I'm sending an e-newsletter out to our Founding Family - that's both powerful and emotional for me.
This visual anchor is so relevant for our team this week as we prepare to meet families for the first time at the cookout as well as when we all meet for the first day of summer PD. There are many distractions, lots and lots of late nights that our launch team has put in, racking over every detail, transitioning from a different school, transitioning and relocating from a different state as well as taken on new roles which impact each of us in some form. These distractions and seasons of change can tend to hinder us at times. However, this visual anchor reminds us that of our greater charge and the "why" behind our purpose for joining the team. This visual anchor reminds us to remain laser focused on our vision for our kings and queens despite the moments of apprehension, confusion, exhaustion, and change that we will experience.
This is why it is important for us to connect and join as one team and family. While there are many elementary educators throughout our city, your KNCPE family will be able to support you and show agape to you the best because being in a founding school is much different than being in a school that has already been established. However, just think - because of your hard work, passion, and devotion, KNCPE will soon be a well-known, established school because of each of you. I am excited about the weeks, months and years to come for our school family and our school.
So, as we move closer to day 1 of PD and day 1 of school for our kings and queens, let's focus on our end goal and vision for our kings and queens and lean on each other for unconditional support and agape.

KIPP Nashville Regional Professional Development: New-to-KIPP Nashville PD
KIPP Nashville Team,
We are working hard and gearing up for your first day with us for summer training on Monday, July 10th. We’ll be kicking off summer PD with all of the new team members joining KIPP Nashville across our 5 schools in 3 days of shared professional development, led by Relay Graduate School of Education. Last summer for the first time, we partnered with Relay to lead PD on some of our core practices and got overwhelmingly positive feedback from both new and veteran teachers. We’re excited to be partnering with Relay again this summer.
There is some pre-work required, so I wanted to go ahead and share this now so you have time to prepare.
Overview
Rooted in our Instructional Excellence Rubric (IER), we sat down and mapped out priority areas we know are keys to successfully starting the year at KIPP Nashville. Some of our veterans will have more experience with these skills from Teach Like a Champion, and some newer folks may not. We look forward to having a mixed bag of experience to learn together and learn from one another while building a shared language to support our regional collaboration.
The trainings will include: Creating a Culture of High Expectations (including school-wide discipline systems, student engagement, clear expectations), Establishing Culture (including teacher tone, and confident/authentic presence), and Cultural Competence.
Pre-Work <approx. 1 hour>
Please hold 1 hour to read and internalize the pre-reading (use this link to access) in advance of July 10th.

KNCPE Summer PD: Year of the Royal Visionaries
*During Week 3 of PD, we will begin our staff huddle (Royal Huddle) at 7am to begin to transition to the time we will meet as a team each morning once school begins.*
Coming up: The KNCPE Summer PD schedule will be shared in next week's Royal Report.
The various topics that will be covered:
- Classroom Culture (Teach Like a Champion Taxonomies)
- School-wide routines and procedures - norming and aligning on universal language
- Daily school culture practice/"scrimmage" sessions
- Regular school culture rehearsals for the first day of school and the first week of school
- Phonics Instruction and Execution
- Guided Reading Planning and Instruction
- STEP (reading assessment) Administration training and execution
- KIPP Eureka Math
During summer PD, we will host two "Open House"/orientation days (July 25th and Jul 26th) for our Founding Families to come in and:
- Meet their king's/queen's teachers
- Have their king/queen STEP assessed by their teacher
- Pick up Operations-related items (first week of school name tags, car rider/bus rider decals, sign up for after-school care with the YMCA and/or Boys and Girls Club, pick up pre-ordered school uniforms, etc.)
The goal is to have 100% of enrolled families attend one of the orientation days so that we enter into the school year with STEP/diagnostic reading level data for 100% of our kings and queens.
We will analyze the reading data during the week of KSS in order to form guided reading groups.

KIPP Vital Behavior: Renew to Get Stronger
While we are embarking on a special, beautiful, challenging journey as school founders, our leadership team also wants you to prioritize self-care and renewal throughout the school year. We want you to also fulfill your personal goals while preserving your emotional health during the school year.
Here is a post about how the Renew to Get Stronger vital behavior at KIPP is described in regards to principals. However, I feel that that are nuggets that each of you can take away from it.
As I read through each of your staff survey results, I noticed that several of you shared that you wanted to make it a priority to get out and explore Nashville this summer. To help with enjoying the remaining days of summer, Cameron, our Assistant Principal, has shared the following activities that will be taking place throughout the city. Check some of them out:
*Courtesy of Randall Tarkington, Vanderbilt University*
Weather Forecast - Potentially, it could be wet week. Highs will be in the upper 80’s and low 90’s. Some chance of storms on Friday night and strong chance on Saturday. The 4th looks like it could be wet at times with scattered thunderstorms in the forecast.
There are some fun things happening over the weekend like the Art Crawls and Frist Friday and Arrington Vineyard’s 10 year celebration. However, this time of year in Nashville, it is all about the 4th of July.
Kick it off with the Thirth of July Block Party in East Nashville. Stay across the river on the 4th for the 2017 Music City Hot Chicken Festival. Then you can head downtown for the Music City July 4th Celebration. The music is great and the fireworks are some of the best in the world. There are several great venues downtown with parties which include food, music, beverages, and great views of the fireworks. Whether it’s ACME Feed and Seed or Museum 21c, there are many options if you want to spend the money. It’s also free to just go downtown and watch along the riverfront.
There are a few tickets going on sale this week for upcoming shows. Coming to the Ryman: Moon Taxi and St. Vincent. Coming to Bridgestone: The Foo Fighters. Coming to Fontanel: Kid Rock.
Featured Place of the Week
Caviar and Bananas - 2031 Broadway – I have already been twice this week so I think you can gather that I like this new place which opened by Vandy. Fresh, real, good food, made from scratch every day is what they advertise and they keep to their word. You walk in and the space is open and really interesting. The first thing you see is the counter to order breakfast or pastries. Walking past that, there is a section where you have salad options. They have some salad combinations on the menu or you can design your own. Also in that area are some prepared foods like grilled chicken breasts or grilled eggplant stacks or mac and cheese. Then there is the sandwich station. My choices so far have been a Pimento Cheese and Bacon sandwich and a Buena Vista Cobb Salad. There is a weekend brunch with lemon oatmeal pancakes. There is a full coffee bar. There is a section of wine and beer. There is a section of fun jams, jellies, and other great things. Again, I kind of love this place. Prices are reasonable. You get your items and then go to a counter and pay. There are tables and bar stools for seating. It is a little loud but that is a very small complaint. They are open Monday-Thursday 7AM-8:30PM, Friday 7AM-9PM, Saturday 8AM-9PM, and Sunday 8AM-8PM. More information at http://www.caviarandbananas.com/location/nashville/.
