Dr. Hector P. Garcia Middle School~ Northside ISD
October 1-5, 2018
Best Superintendent in Texas! (But we already knew that!)
Northside Superintendent Brian Woods, a longtime educator and vocal advocate for public education, has been named the best superintendent in the state by Texas Association of School Boards.
The announcement of Dr. Woods’ selection as the statewide Superintendent of the year was made Friday afternoon in Austin at the joint convention for TASB and the Texas Association of School Administrators. Earlier this year, Woods was named the Region 20 Superintendent of the Year and then was selected as one of five finalists.
"I am overwhelmed by this honor," Dr. Woods said. "It's really a recognition of the thousands of Northside employees and all that they do for students."
Dr. Woods has been an educator for 26 years beginning his career in Northside in 1992 as a social studies teacher at Marshall High School. Woods then helped open O’Connor High School as an Assistant Principal. He was later named Vice Principal and Principal at Clark High School. Dr. Woods has also worked in Northside as Assistant Superintendent for Secondary Administration and Deputy Superintendent.
"It takes lots of people to make NISD the successful school district that it is, but the man at the helm provides the leadership, inspiration and guidance needed to be successful," NISD Board President M’Lissa Chumbley said. "People all around Texas know about Northside ISD and they know about our quality leader.”
Dr. Woods also is recognized throughout the state for his leadership and advocacy of issues that affect all public school children in Texas. Throughout the last legislative session, Dr. Woods made regular trips to Austin, often daily, to testify on the impact of legislation to Texas school districts, both large and small. He also spent hours on the phone and in Austin, talking one-on-one with legislators about the very real repercussions of a drastic reduction in education funding.
“We are so proud of Dr. Woods, his leadership and his passion for our students,” Chumbley said.
Candidates for Superintendent of the Year are chosen for their strong leadership skills, dedication to improving the quality of education in their school districts, commitment to public support, involvement in education and ability to build good employee relations among teachers and staff members.
Dr. Woods has a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of Texas at Austin and a master’s degree and doctorate in educational leadership from the University of Texas at San Antonio.
He serves as Vice President of the Texas Association of School Administrators and is a past Chair of the Regional Advisory Executive Committee for Education Service Center, Region 20. He is a member of the Go Public Steering Committee, the Board of P16Plus Council of Greater Bexar County, and the San Antonio Chamber of Commerce. He also serves as President of the Board of Texas Academic Decathlon and is a member of the Superintendents Advisory Board of the Principals’ Institute, the steering committee for Fast Growth School Coalition, the Superintendent’s Advisory Council for the Holdsworth Center, and an officer in Texas School Alliance. Northside Superintendent Brian Woods, a longtime educator and vocal advocate for public education, has been named the best superintendent in the state by Texas Association of School Boards.
Congratulations Dr. Woods!

Pillar of Responsibility
We are proud to announce one of our Garcia parents is a NISD Pillar of Character! Dr. Mark Moran, parent of Ethan, is NISD Pillar of Responsibility!
Mark Moran failed to make his seventh grade basketball team at Hobby Middle School. He will be the first to say this was a blessing in disguise. The valuable lesson he learned was perseverance. After working tirelessly over the next year, he earned his place as a starting basketball player at Hobby Middle School and then Clark High School for the rest of his basketball career. He even became the Clark High School team captain and was selected for All-District and All-City teams. He turned his failure into success and carried this perseverance through college, graduate school, and medical school.
Moran attended Adams Hill Elementary School for three years before moving to Locke Hill Elementary School. He then went to Hobby Middle School and finished his Northside education at Clark High School. In addition to basketball, he was Student Council Vice President, a member of both Mu Alpha Theta and National Honor Society, and was voted Best All-Around Male and Homecoming King by his classmates.
Today, Dr. Moran practices Pain Managem
ent and is the acting President of Consultants in Pain Medicine, PA. He received his undergraduate degree from Southwestern University before obtaining his graduate degree in Biochemistry. He attended the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio for his medical degree. He completed his residency in Anesthesiology and then was fellowship trained in Pain Management and Penn State. He believes in a multifactorial approach to treating his patients and encourages all of them to be "active participants, instead of passive recipients" in their health care.
He and his wife Melissa, whom he met in the fourth grade at Locke Hill, are proud parents of two children, Emily and Ethan. Both children attend Northside schools. Dr. Moran sits on the board of directors for Geneus Health and Kalypso Wellness, two national businesses for which he is also a founder. In his spare time, he enjoys basketball, tennis, coaching, and spending time with his children.

Introducing our Vice Principal
Our New Vice Principal - Mrs. Heim
A lot has changed this year at Hector Garcia Middle School, including some of our staff. One of the biggest changes is a new vice principal. This year we welcome Mrs. Theresa Heim.
So far she is settling in to our school and loves the family feel of Garcia. Her goal as a vice principal is to improve student safety. She wants everybody at our school to be as safe as possible.
Mrs. Heim became an educator because of the impact teachers had on her when she was a child. Her teachers motivated her, and she wants to do the same for today’s children.
However, teaching wasn’t her only dream. When she was young, Mrs. Heim was an athlete who attended the University of the Incarnate Word on a volleyball scholarship. She continues to play volleyball during her free time.
Mrs. Heim would like the Garcia students to remember this quote from motivational speaker Zig Zigler: “Your value does not decrease based on someone’s inability to see your worth.”
So be sure to say hi to our new vice principal Mrs. Heim. She is a great addition to our staff, and we’re happy to have her here.
