King's Highway Weekly Newsletter

A Note from Dr. Miles,
Good morning Parents and Guardians!
Happy Spring everyone! This will be our first full week of Spring, but we will not be able to spend it together since we have Spring Break starting on Wednesday, March 25th-Monday, April 1st. I will see all of our energizer bunnies after Easter. On Tuesday, April 2nd is 1/2 day Teacher In-Service and 1/2 for Parent/Teacher conferences-NO SCHOOL for students.
When we return from break, it will be AUTISM AWARENESS SPIRIT WEEK. See below to see how you can participate in this special week and share your experience with someone.
We have had a wonderful month at King's HIghway celebrating Read Across America. On Thursday, March 21st we held our Title 1 Literacy Showcase which was a huge success. Thank you to all of you who came out to see the amazing work of our students and teachers. I was astonished of all the creative and collaborative projects that each class displayed. I have to give credit to my teachers, especially those on the Title 1 Committee: Cathy Chanudet, Katie Cinberg, Dara Crane, BethAnn Hackmeister, Kat Landis, Kirstin Maloney, , Kelsey McIntyre, Therese Mitchell and Michelle Miles. Their hard work and dedication to meeting the goals for the month are unmatched and I am proud of them and the success of the evening.
LOST AND FOUND: Are you looking for your child's coat, hoodie, water bottle or some item of clothing that you may not have seen for some time? If you seek it, you may find it, probably at the school lost and found. Please feel free contact the school to inform them of your need to check the lost and found for your child's lost belongings.
Monday, March 25th: Family reading bingo boards are due by today and those who hand it in may be eligible to win a family reading basket.
Fun Fact for Women's History Month: This Pennsylvanian gold medalist and decorated women's basketball player and coach ranks at the top of the March Madness brackets. Philadelphia's own Dawn Staley has proven to be one of the best point guards to ever have played the game. She still exhibits and inspires the young ladies she coaches to be the best they can be and also makes March Madness so much more exciting. We'll see if her team, South Carolina, will repeat as champions in 2024!
ABSENCES: YOUR CHILD'S PRESENCE IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT TO US!
Parents please be advised that when your child is absent from school, you MUST have a note explaining their absence when they return. You have three days to have the note into the office. If a note is not received in that time, it becomes an ILLEGAL/UNLAWFUL absence. You may send the note directly to the attendance secretary Ms. Kenisha Archey-Cole at archeycolek@casdschools.org. Sending notes with your child may not be received as they may forget to give them to their teacher.
Thank you,
Dr. Miles
Congratulations Ava! Welcome to Kindergarten!
Incoming kindergartener, Ava Knerr, came to King's Highway in pure anticipation and excitement to receive her prize. She won the KHS raffle basket on Wednesday, April 13 at the Kindergarten Carnival held at Rainbow. The event was totally awesome and a huge success for the CASD. Ava and her parents received a tour of the school and the kindergarten classrooms as well as lots of information about King's Highway from Dr. Miles. Ava is really ready for Kindergarten!
AUTISM AWARENESS SPIRIT WEEK
STEM DESIGN CHALLENGE
How can we help Pennsylvania farmers through engineering high-tech farming equipment? King's Highway fourth and fifth students tackled this question as part of the recent STEM Design Challenge hosted by the Chester County Intermediate Unit. Under the direction of Miss Kaptur over several months, teams moved through each stage of the engineering design process, from brainstorming problems, to researching existing solutions, to prototyping and testing their own creative ideas. Using K'Nex, teams built a variety of inventions, from robotic mushroom pickers to a device for training and translating. Two King's Highway teams showcased their teams' prototypes, design process, and blueprints in a live competition with teams from around the county. Congratulations to all of our future engineers who showcased the teamwork and innovation that make Coatesville great!

TITLE 1 BOOK SWAP
Do you remember "back in the day" the Reading is Fundamental (RIF) program where we would go to the library and have the opportunity to choose a book that was of high interest to us? Well, the Title 1 committee extended themselves to reach out and gather loads books of high interest for our young readers at King's Highway. On Tuesday, March 19th we held a Book Swap where students were open to choose their very own book and exchange turns reading with a friend.
