Charger Check-In
January 6, 2022
A Note from Ms. Owens
Happy 2022 to all our SCA families! I hope your family was able to spend time together and make fond memories despite the Covid spike we are experiencing. I was blessed to get to California to see my parents for 10 days. It's the rainy season there right now, so we didn't have much sunshine, but the state is still in a drought and my parents were thankful for the rain.
We finished a sucessful second day back at school today! Despite some morning sleepiness, I know the students are glad to be in their classrooms with their teachers and their friends. The cacophony of students engaged in learning activities is something that always warms my heart! In 8th grade, we're learning about Reconstruction. In 1st grade, we're learning to count money. In 6th grade, we're reading Restart by Gordon Korman. (I read it over break. It's a good read!)
Because of the amazingly cold weather, we haven't had recess this week. So if your child is coming home with extra energy, please know we haven't been able to get them outside to run and play. We will likely be inside again Friday and Monday based on the weather forcast. If you're able to get your child moving in an activity to burn off some energy on these days, we would be so appreciative. Students who are able to "move" are better able to regulate their classroom behavior.
- Mrs. Harris has agreed to stay with our 7th and 8th graders for the remainder of the school year as their English teacher. She will also teach religion to 8th grade and help them prepare for Confirmation. (If you recall, this was initially sub position for a few weeks at the end of a maternity leave.)
- Mrs. Anderson has returned to St. Catherine as our 7th and 8th grade reading teacher. She will also teach social studies to 8th grade.
- Ms. Ward - our Coordinator of Family Faith Formation - will also be teaching music to our PK-4 grade students.
- Mrs. Stanke will be working with Mrs. Stonis as the full-time instructional aide in Room 103. Mrs. Stanke has frequently been filling in as the aide since the position became open.
A Bit More News
- It's time to sign up for our January Beyond the Books sessions. The form went home in Thursday's White Envelope. It is also available below. Forms and payment are due back on Wednesday, January 12.
- Our Christmas Break, we were able to install an additional touchless water bottle refilling station outside of the bathrooms by the primary floor. We need to give a huge thanks to our Family School Association for funding this improvement!
- Dream Raffle season is almost upon us! If you are interested in or have questions about serving as a ticket captain, please email dreamrafflesca@gmail.com.
- If you know of an SCA family who owns a small business that we can publicize here to help support them, please reach out to me via email. Scroll down to see local businesses we can support.
I wish you and all those you love blessings and joy during 2022.
Peace,
Kristine Owens
CDPH Travel Advisory/Quarantine States - as of 1/4
- All unvaccinated individuals who travel to an orange state must provide proof of a negative Covid test in order to return to school.
- The test must be administered no more than 72-hours prior to return to Illinois.
- The test can also be administered once you have returned to Illinios.
- As of December 30, 2021, home administered tests are acceptable for travel. However, the test must have either Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) from the FDA or full approval from the FDA.
Changes to the School Calendar
The first day was Tuesday, January 4.
The additional two days will be added to already-existing long weekends (a requirement of the Office of Catholic Schools). Those days are Friday, February 18 and Friday, March 11.
We have one additional day remaining and we are reserving it as a potential Snow Day. If we need to cancel school because of inclimate weather, we will be able to have a real snow day - no remote learning, no remote teaching, no Zooming. We can only do this once this school year. Additional snow days will have to be remote learning days so we meet our required days of instruction.
