WORDS MATTER BOOKSTORE IN-STORE WISHLIST
The PTO is sponsoring a fundraiser through the Words Matter Bookstore in Pitman, NJ. They are asking all teachers to complete a book wish list to provide the store owner. Please take a moment to complete the wish list if you are interested. The In-store book fair for Orchard Valley Middle School is from Tuesday, November 29, through Sunday, December 4!

NO PLACE FOR HATE POETRY SLAM CONTEST
OVMS participates in the Anti-Defamation League's program called No Place for Hate. In the fall, winter and spring, OVMS hosts a school wide competition in accordance with the partnership with the ADL. This fall, students will be asked to participate in our OVMS Poetry Slam Contest which begins Tuesday, November 22, and concludes Thursday, December 22, 2022. Students will receive a review/explanation of the project contest on Tuesday, November 22 during the lunch periods. There will be one winner per grade level and each winner will receive a $25.00 Visa Gift Card, a Certificate, and the winning poems will be posted on our OVMS School Website. Please encourage your children to participate in our first No Place for Hate School-Wide Project.
OVMS REMIND APP
OVMS has established a REMIND account and will be communicating with parents via text message with reminders about upcoming events, school information, fundraisers and other information pertaining to our school. We are hoping that all parents will join our REMIND account to stay connected! There is a separate class code for each grade level. If you have more than one child in OVMS, please join all of the classes that pertain to your family!

NEW CLUB
Knitting Club - Students will learn the basics of knitting and take on a few projects throughout the year. Knitting Club sign ups begin next week. The club will meet once a month on the second Tuesday of each month.
HALLOWEEN DANCE
The Halloween Dance was a great success last week. Over 250 students participated in the dance. Students danced until their feet tired, had a lot of fun and showed off their costumes. It was a fantastic event! Thank you for the PTO and the Drama Club for organizing this event.

BATHROOM CARD STOCK PASSES
Students are required to carry Bathroom Card Stock Passes to each period. The card stock pass is the Middle School monitoring tool to ensure student safety when using the restroom. Students must be accounted for at all times throughout the day. Students are allowed to use the restroom one time between AM periods 1-3, depending on the grade level. Additionally, students are allowed to use the bathroom without their card stock pass during PE, Lunch and Study Hall. Lastly students are permitted restroom usage during the PM periods 6 to 8. There are ample opportunities to use the restroom throughout each day. Please remind your children to carry their passes with them to each class period. Neglecting to do so will result in administrative interventions.

- We ask all parents to pull all the way up to the corner where school personnel are located. This allows students to exit vehicles on the sidewalk. Additionally, it is always recommended and the safest way to exit a vehicle on the curb side. Getting to school on time is very important and exiting a vehicle safely is equally important. Lastly, please do not make your own line by pulling out of drop offline and driving in the right lane. That lane is kept open for student safety and emergency vehicles. Please stay in parent drop offline. Thank you for your continued and ongoing cooperation.
- Homeroom begins at 7:50 a.m. every day. Students arriving after 7:50 a.m. must report directly to the Main Office. Students will be marked late. Please review the Code of Conduct for unexcused attendance consequences.
- The side car ride door will close promptly at 7:50 a.m.

The Kastle Fundraiser was a success reaching the 10k goal with 10,145.00. Hurray!!! to our students and families taking on the task and doing the work to support our school! As a result, the Xtreme Team Basketball Show will be held on November 1, 2022 (students only), at that time Mr. Avery will be silly stringed and dunked over and yes we will share the video and pictures with our OV Families on our Smore page!

PENNY WARS
Penny Wars is a fundraising effort by our PTO and an opportunity for students to collect their extra pennies to put towards programming for each grade level. They are competing to win a class trick and treat. Penny Wars Competition begins October 3rd and concludes October 14th, 2022.

FRAYED POWER CHARGERS CONCERN
Parents / Guardians, please make sure that your children’s device chargers are not frayed at any part of the charger. The exposed copper plugged in to a power source can cause a fire and or injury. Please see the example of a frayed charger cord and check to see the condition of your child's charging cord.

FITNESS CLUB
OVMS is looking for students to join the Fitness Club. The club will meet twice a month led by one of our own in house fitness PE trainers Mrs. Thistle. Mr. Avery will also run a structured open gym for the second Fitness Club meeting date each month. In order to participate students must complete a physical and turn in a permission slip. Please have your child contact Mrs. Thistle during the day to sign up and receive a copy of the districts physical form.
REMINDERS
- Cell phones must be kept away and off at all times during the school day, preferably in lockers.
- Students must wear shirts /tops that cover the mid section and shoulders, as well as shoes with a backing.
- Students are not allowed to use bookbags while in school and however permitted to go to their lockers in between each period.
OVMS PARENT UPDATE #5 - Monday, October 3, 2022
WASHINGTON TOWN HIGH SCHOOL HOSTING 8TH GRADE ORIENTATION MEETING FOR PARENTS
An informative presentation about Washington Township High School and its programs, as well as a self-tour of the 9/10 building, will be offered on Wednesday, October 19, 2022, at 6:30 p.m. starting in the school’s Republic Bank Performing Arts Center. All 8th grade parents and students who are currently enrolled in 8th grade and will be part of the freshman class at the high school for the 2023-24 school year are invited. The presentation will highlight pertinent academic information along with information on athletics. The presentation is expected to last approximately 30 minutes. After the presentation there will be time for parents and students to meet with department supervisors, coaches, club advisors and students in the 9-10 cafeteria, gymnasium, and auxiliary gymnasium. Parents and guardians are encouraged to attend.
STUDENT ATTENDANCE AT WTHS VARSITY FOOTBALL GAMES
All students in grade 8 and below must enter with a parent/guardian or other chaperone. No more than 2 students grade 8 and below can enter with each parent/guardian or other adult that is required to supervise our younger students at all times. Parent/guardian or other adult will be required to sign in and list the names of the student(s) they are supervising at the stadium front gate when they enter.
STUDENT ATTENDANCE AT WTHS HOME FOOTBALL GAMES
- No backpacks, sling bags or other bags will be permitted into the stadium.
- No food or drinks can be brought into the stadium. Concession stands will be open for spectators to purchase refreshments during the game.
- Spectators will not be permitted to re-enter the stadium once they leave. No entry will be permitted after Halftime.
With the support of our parents and community, we can all work together to further ensure a safe and positive atmosphere for all who come out to support our Football Team, our Marching Band and our Cheerleaders that bring tremendous pride to our school community. The OVMS Parent Information Parent Update #4 - Wednesday, September 21, 2022
The SSSA will take place tomorrow September 22, and Friday, September 23, 2022. Sixth grade students only will take the science assessment on Friday. All students will take the ELA and Math assessments and the sixth grade only will take the Science assessment. At the conclusion of the test students will follow an abbreviated eight period day.

FIELD HOCKEY
Congratulations to the Middle School Field Hockey Team for being UNDEFEATED!

DRESS CODE REMINDER:
Students are to have shoulders covered, shoes with a backing and no midriff shirts. Students that are out of dress code will be asked to change and or call home to ask for someone to deliver the specific appropriate clothing item. Please note, students will not be able to return to class until they are in appropriate attire. However, they will be allowed to receive any missed work / assignments. We thank you for your on going partnership and cooperation.
CELL PHONES:
The expectation is that cell phones and smart watches are off and away in student lockers. Students that possess a cell phone in the gym locker room will be subject to consequences.
LOCKER USAGE:
Students are allowed to go to their lockers in between each class period. Students are to select the material needed for class and return the material they are not using from the previous course.
YEARBOOKS ARE ON SALE:
Yearbooks are on sale for $35.00 and can be purchased at jostens.com. If ordered by October 28, 2022 each personalization comes with four free icons!

Orchard Valley Middle School Parent Update #2
Good Afternoon Orchard Valley Middle Families / Guardians,
What an exciting first three days of school! Your children, our students are exceptional, and we feel so privileged to work with each and every student that attends OVMS this 2022-2023 School Year. Please rest easy because your children are quickly acclimating to their schedules, faculty, and the facility. As students become more and more familiar with the Panther way, we are happy to continue to keep you posted on OVMS activities, events, procedures, reminders, and updates. Below you will find updates and reminders for this week.
1. Magazine Fundraiser:
- This is a PTO sponsored event.
- This event is intended to raise funding to support programming for the student body.
- Be on the look out for a flier going home on Tuesday, September 13, 2022.
- The fundraiser magazine competition ends September 30th.
- Students that sell magazines receive prizes which will be noted in the flier.
- Please help the PTO Fundraise.
2. Back to School Night
- Date: Monday, September 12, 2022
- Time: 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
- Parents will have an opportunity to meet their student[s] teachers. This is also a great night to tour and learn the facilities.
3. Parent Drop Off Procedure (Car Riders)
- Student breakfast begins at 7:35 a.m.
- Students can be dropped off at OVMS at that time.
- Regular non-breakfast drop off time is at 7:45 a.m.
- Busses let students off the bus at 7:45 a.m.
- Parents that are in the car line are asked to wait patiently for school personnel to release the empty busses.
- After busses are released, cars in line will be released shortly after.
- Safety is our number one goal, and we appreciate your ongoing cooperation.
4. Parent Pick Up Procedure (Car Riders)
- Students are dismissed from school at 2:55 p.m.
- Parents please form two car lines on the same side of as the daily A.M. Parent Drop Off.
- Students being picked up by parents / guardians at dismissal exit the building and locate parent/guardian vehicles for transport home.
- Students board their assigned bus at the same time as car riders are locating their transports.
- When all students have boarded their individual busses, school personnel release all the school busses.
- After all busses exit and all students are safely in cars, alternating car lines are released by building personnel.
- We ask that you stay in your lanes throughout the duration of dismissal for the safety of all, students, school personnel, parents, and any school visitors.

In order to make the building more functional for students, families and faculty we labelled the hallways in the building. Please see the highlighted map below.
THREE:
Free Lunch Program: all families must fill out the free lunch program form into to determine free lunch access. Please fill out this form as soon as possible. However, lunch and breakfast are available for purchase.
FOUR:
Bookbags are not allowed during the day. Students must place bookbags in their lockers at the start of the day and are to be retrieved at the conclusion of the day.
Continued Practices at OVMS
Bathroom Procedure
Each student will receive a monthly card stock chart with two slots for each day.
Teachers or faculty are required to sign appropriate date and line on the card stock when giving students permission to use the restroom or nurse. Students are to also receive a Hall Pass signed by the teacher or faculty member to provide permission to pass through the hallway. Students will also sign in at the bathroom when there is a hall monitor available.
Teachers are to sign and ensure the time is filled out upon leaving and returning. Students seeking more than allotted time slots for bathroom use must notify administration to address too much time away from instruction, however, students are be permitted to use the restroom.

Cell Phones:
Student cell phones are to be placed off and away all day. Preferably in their bookbags in their locker.
Dress Code:
Students are not allowed to wear the following popular items:
- Shirts exposing mid-drift area
- Sandals/ slides
- Flip flops
- Crocs without a sports mode strap, shoes must have a backing
- Spaghetti straps, it is advisable that shoulders be covered
- Air Buds or Headphones of any design
Physical Education
- Students are expected to change for gym daily.
Student's Regular School Day Times to Highlight
- Doors Open for Breakfast @7:40 a.m.
- Bus Students unload @7:45 a.m.
- Homeroom begins @7:50 a.m.
- Late to School @7:51 a.m.
- First Period begins @8:03 a.m.
- First Lunch begins @10:38 a.m.
- Dismissal @2:55 a.m.
- Afterschool Activities begin @3:00 p.m.
- Afterschool Activities end @4:00 p.m.
- Late Bus @4:05 p.m.
